Overview

Are you a highly motivated and skilled speech and language therapist looking to advance your skills in autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders including Developmental Language Disorder?

We are currently looking for an experienced band 7 ADOS trained SLT with a passion for working with children with Social Communication Difficulties (SCD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as part of a friendly, experienced and knowledgeable multi-disciplinary team of professionals.

You will have a key role in the assessment of ASD in pre-school and school aged children, working alongside Paediatricians and other members of the MDT within the Cheyne Child Development Services based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Parkview Centre for Health and Wellbeing, and at Woodfield Child Development Service based at the Medical Centre, Woodfield Road. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced clinicians wanting to continue to develop their expertise in Child Development Services.

You will also be joining a progressive, collaborative and innovative Early Years Speech and Language Therapy team delivering a service to the Boroughs of Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea. The post holder will assist senior colleagues as needed in tasks related to audit, service development and supervision.

Main duties
  • Work within the Early Years Speech and Language Therapy and Child Development Service Teams to provide a highly specialist assessment and diagnostic service as part of a multidisciplinary team, for assessment and diagnosis of Autism and related conditions using relevant standardised assessments (such as the ADOS).
  • Deliver highly specialist clinical services to children across the age range referred to the child development service.
  • Demonstrate well established highly specialist skills in Autism Spectrum Condition and other relevant clinical specialisms within the broad range of speech, language and communication needs; this will be supported by training up to Master’s level or equivalent with demonstrable in-depth experience in clinical practice.
  • Provide highly specialist clinical supervision and line management to other SLTs and support junior therapists in training and development.

Qualifications and experience

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent
  • HCPC Licence to Practice
  • Current HCPC and RCSLT registration
  • Continued Professional Development portfolio including reflective practice and specialist training
  • Evidence of Autism assessment experience
  • Completed ADOS assessment training with regular use for preschool and school aged children; able to administer, interpret findings and score the assessment

Desirable

  • Master’s level or equivalent
  • Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks (CENs)
Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience with children with speech, language and communication disorders and social communication differences, including complex needs (minimum 4 years postgraduate)
  • In-depth experience in ASD service delivery
  • Experience in assessment and management of Autism, Learning disabilities, Language disorders
  • Ability to make differential diagnoses from assessments and seek advice as needed
  • Experience in MDT diagnostic assessments and contributing to MDT reports
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary and inter-agency working, including collaboration with parents and professionals
  • Experience in planning, delivering and evaluating training to varied audiences
  • Experience in supervising and line managing other SLTs
  • Experience in care planning to address SLC needs of children and young people
  • Experience supporting children, families and schools in line with statutory processes including EHCPs

Desirable

  • Experience as a highly specialist SLT in relevant clinical field within last 18 months
Skills

Essential

  • Advanced knowledge of assessment tools (including ADOS) and a range of service delivery models for children with social communication differences; evidence-based practice
  • Knowledge of National Policies and Procedures relevant to Health, Social Services and Education
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • IT literacy for clinical and administrative tasks
  • Understanding of safeguarding, information governance and other legal frameworks applied to clinical practice
