Overview
The Young Adult (YA) Project at HMP Bronzefield is a pilot project recognised for the increased levels of self-harm and violence amongst 18-25 year old women in custody. The project delivers an enhanced level of support to this vulnerable group, underpinned by a partnership between CNWL, Sodexo, and the Women's Estate Psychology Service. The clinical model adopts a holistic approach to assessment and care planning, with trauma-informed principles and emphasis on relational security and co-production. There is scope for ongoing development and flexibility in service provision.
Job responsibilities
- To provide specialist psychological assessments to young adults in HMP Bronzefield using complex data from psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, structured observations and semi-structured interviews with young adults and others involved in their care.
- To develop individual psychological formulations and lead on team formulations. To develop and utilise a range of psychological interventions to support the team and prison in understanding and managing the young adults.
- To formulate and implement plans for the psychological treatment and/or management of a young adult’s mental health and behavioural presentation, considering an appropriate conceptual framework, theoretical and therapeutic models, and evidence-based methods. Interventions may be individual and group-based depending on need.
- To work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure service delivery is informed by psychological understanding of young adults’ strengths and needs.

Job Description
Job responsibilities
- To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychology/psychological therapy across the service, by developing the skills of a reflexive and reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and keeping up-to-date with current developments in psychology and related disciplines.
- Maintain high standards of clinical record keeping, including electronic data entry, reporting, and professional self-governance in line with professional codes and Trust policies.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, policies, and issues related to the specific patient group and mental health.
- Ensure diversity considerations (race, culture, identity, gender, sexuality) are incorporated in all professional activity.
- Ensure service users are consulted about their care and empowered to express views, contributing to service development and improvement.
- Communicate with other counselling providers within the prison to ensure robust referral pathways and appropriate case division.
Person Specification
Essential – Education and Qualifications
- Doctoral level training in clinical, counselling or forensic psychology or equivalent, accredited by the BPS; HCPC registered as a Practitioner Psychologist, or equivalent post-graduate qualification in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (or BABCP accreditation) or equivalent; evidence of post-qualification specialist training in a relevant area.
- Evidence of post-qualification specialist training, experience and developing expertise in a specialist area of clinical practice relevant to this role.
Desirable – Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Experience in complex psychological assessment and intervention; ability to supervise junior staff and trainees; ability to teach and train others; strong governance and information technology skills.
- Broad knowledge of models of assessment, management, and treatment of offenders with mental health difficulties and personality disorders; ability to work with high needs, including sexual and violent offending and self-harming behaviours.
- Experience with Neuropsychology and trauma-informed approaches with young adults with complex needs.

Previous Experience
- Specialist experience as an applied psychologist with substantial clinical supervision and experience across a range of client groups and settings, including multidisciplinary care and teaching/supervision.
- Knowledge of guidance and legislation related to the client group and mental health; experience in secure/forensic settings desirable.
Other
- Ability to work in a secure environment with prison security clearance; ability to implement equal opportunities policies; promote inclusive practice.
