New Road Surgery Rubery is looking for an enthusiastic, committed healthcare assistant to join our existing clinical team.
Main duties of the job include:
- Provide treatment room services, phlebotomy (venepuncture including INR testing), dressings, NHS & new patient health checks, ECGs and vaccinations.
- Ensure consultation rooms are clean, well‑stocked, prepared for clinics, manage stock control and ordering of medical supplies.
- Follow instructions and procedures, demonstrating good communication skills, a kind and caring disposition.

Job Description
- Responsible to: Practice Manager (administratively) and to Doctors & Nurses (clinically).
- Responsibilities:
- Venepuncture including INR testing: take blood as directed, ensure infection control, label and package specimens, enter results, refer any problems, perform quality control, manage supplies.
- New patient, over 75 and well‑person screening & NHS health checks: carry out screening, note risk factors, provide smoking cessation leaflets, complete QOF coding, task review by nurse.
- Vaccinations: administer against influenza, COVID, pneumonia & shingles to patients over 17 (excluding pregnant women), ensure safe storage, rotation, disposal, monitor protocols, aware of anaphylaxis risks.
- Wound care (as directed by nurses): perform aseptic wound care, uncomplicated dressings, suture and clip removal.
- Routine BP checks, urine analysis and ECGs: monitor, refer if outside guidelines, report results directly to duty doctor.
- Provide smoking cessation information and complete QOF coding.
- Apply infection control measures: universal hygiene, specimen handling, waste segregation, sharps injury reporting, blood and body fluid spill management.
- Administration: inform patients of result procedures, seek and record consent, monitor supplies, help maintain treatment rooms and consulting areas, restock, support stock ordering.
- Training & personal development: participate in annual staff development interview, appraise training with practice nurse.
- Miscellaneous tasks: chaperone doctors, assist with minor surgery or IUD, attend practice meetings, health & safety awareness, safeguarding responsibilities.
Person Specification
Experience
- Previous Healthcare Assistant experience.
- Experience dealing with the public/patients.
- Desirable: experience in a primary care setting.
- Desirable: experience using Emis Web Clinical System.
