Help protect people, craftsmanship and heritage — while building a long-term career in Health & Safety.

At John Smedley, health and safety is fundamental to how we work. As we look ahead, we’re seeking a proactive and hands‑on Health & Safety Coordinator to join us at an exciting point of transition. This is a brilliant opportunity for someone early in their Health & Safety career who wants to learn, grow and make a real impact in a manufacturing environment.

You’ll work closely with our teams on site, senior leaders, and a specialist external Health & Safety consultancy — with full support, mentoring and funded long‑term training and qualifications, including a formal apprenticeship (if required) and NEBOSH.

What You’ll Do
  • Delivering toolbox talks and safety briefings
  • Carrying out daily site walkarounds and safety inspections
  • Managing Health & Safety inductions for new starters, contractors and visitors
  • Supporting the design, coordination and delivery of Health & Safety training
  • Maintaining Health & Safety policies, procedures and records
  • Working closely with our external Health & Safety consultancy on compliance, audits and best practice
  • Supporting risk assessments, inspections and audits across the site
  • Assisting with accident, incident and near‑miss investigations
  • Coordinating occupational health and health surveillance programmes
  • Delivering awareness campaigns and promoting safe working behaviours
  • Preparing reports and data to support senior stakeholders and Board reporting
  • Taking part in Health & Safety meetings and forums

No two days will be the same, and you’ll be encouraged to get involved, ask questions and build confidence as you grow into the role.

Who you Are

  • Interested in machinery safety, ergonomics and safe systems of work
  • Confident communicating with people at all levels of the business
  • Organised, detail‑focused and comfortable working in a site‑based environment
  • Proactive, approachable and keen to learn
  • Motivated to build a long‑term career in Health & Safety
  • You don’t need to have everything already — we’re looking for potential, attitude and commitment, not just qualifications.
Your Development
  • Fully funded long‑term Health & Safety training and development
  • Support through a formal workplace apprenticeship
  • Funding for NEBOSH and other relevant qualifications
  • Ongoing mentoring from senior leaders and external H&S specialists
  • A clear pathway to progress your Health & Safety career
