Overview

Simply Education is seeking a dedicated and experienced Head Teacher/Head of School to join a thriving independent day school in Darwen, Lancashire. This opportunity is on an interim basis, with potential for further opportunities as the trust continues to expand. The school is a provider of education and care for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, particularly those with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties & ASD.

The students supported by the school have often had a challenging educational experience in the past and face significant barriers to learning. With the assistance of a skilled, compassionate teaching and therapeutic team, they are empowered to overcome these barriers and develop the skills they need to succeed beyond their school years.

Main Purpose of the Role

The Head of School will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school and will work closely with the Principal to align the school's development with its shared values and plans. This role is integral to fostering a nurturing and effective learning environment while ensuring the school meets its strategic objectives.

Responsibilities
  • As Head Teacher/Head of School, you will help establish and maintain the school's ethos and strategic direction in partnership with the Principal and governing board, ensuring the input of the wider school community.
  • You will oversee the development of systems, processes, and policies to ensure smooth and efficient school operations.
  • Identifying challenges and barriers to school effectiveness will be a priority, with a focus on creating actionable strategies for school improvement.
  • Ensuring the implementation of school improvement strategies to drive positive outcomes for students.
  • Allocate financial resources responsibly and efficiently to support the school's objectives.
  • Undertake safeguarding responsibilities, supporting the Principal with reporting incidents and liaising with both internal and external stakeholders as necessary.
  • Foster a positive, enriching school culture where pupils feel supported and motivated.
  • As Head Teacher/Head of School, you will uphold educational standards, ensuring pupils are prepared for their next stage in education and life.
  • Maintain staff professionalism and well-being, creating a collaborative environment for ongoing development.
  • Lead by example in maintaining high-quality teaching practices across all subjects, drawing from evidence-based strategies.
  • Build strong relationships with parents and carers, working together to improve attendance, well-being, learning, and achievement.
Skills, Qualifications, and Experience
  • Qualified Teacher status (QTLS or QTS)
  • Recent management or leadership training (Desirable)
  • Accredited training in areas of special education (Desirable)
  • Involvement in school self-evaluation and development planning
  • Demonstrated success in line management and staff development
  • Strong data analysis skills, with the ability to use data to inform decision-making and set targets
  • Understanding of high-quality teaching methods and the ability to model best practices
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships
  • Knowledge of statutory regulations, OFSTED requirements, and the latest developments in special education
  • A commitment to delivering the best outcomes for all pupils and promoting the school's ethos and values
  • The ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and maintain confidentiality at all times
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding, equality, and ensuring personal beliefs are expressed in a professional manner
