Overview

This post is for a 1 year maternity leave fixed term cover for the Head of auditory implant service at St George's Hospital. The implant service works within both Audiology and ENT departments at St George's Hospital. The post holder will have a combination of clinical and management responsibilities for the service.

The post holder will ensure that policies, and protocols for CIs, MEIs and BCHIs are up to date and adhered to by the team, in line with National Standards, and supported by current evidence based medicine. They will also be expected to undertake regular audit of these services, and to review procedures regularly. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the service's adherence to Clinical Governance and GDPR, planning against service objectives, staff management, business planning, marketing and promotion of the service to internal and external stakeholders. The Head of the Auditory Implant Service will work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team and will be responsible for leading the operational and strategic management of the service to ensure delivery of efficient and effective patient care. The role also provides clinical leadership for audiologists and rehabilitation team working in the auditory implant service. The post holder will take overall responsibility for ongoing service development and management of the multidisciplinary team, including appraisal and objective setting, recruitment and retention.

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. The St George's Hospital Auditory Implant Service (AIS) comprises of the Paediatric and Adult Cochlear Implant Programmes and the Bone Conduction Hearing Implants (BCHI) and Middle Ear Implants (MEI) programmes. We offer a comprehensive service for assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients suitable for auditory implants. The team comprises of specialized ENT surgeons, Audiovestibular Physician, Implant audiologists, speech and language therapists, psychologist and teachers of the Hearing Impaired.

The Auditory Implant Service has an integrated relationship working closely alongside ENT, Audiovestibular medicine and the general Audiology department. Within the department there is also extensive access to the network of specialised diagnostic and rehabilitation services from children to adults including Electrophysiological assessments, Vestibular assessments and rehabilitation, tinnitus service, and hearing therapy. The Auditory Implant Service is the main tertiary implant provider across South and South west London, celebrating its close networks with many South London Trusts and CCGs.
