Job description

The Radiation Protection Service at Velindre Cancer Centre (aka RPS Cardiff) delivers a range of ionising radiation protection services to a customer base located primarily in South East Wales. This includes the Aneurin Bevan, Cardiff & Vale, Cwm Taff and Powys Health Boards, Public Health Wales at all of its sites across Wales using ionising radiation, local universities, the private healthcare sector and Velindre University NHS Trust. Services delivered include the statutory roles of Radiation Protection Adviser (under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017), Medical Physics Expert for diagnostic radiology (under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017) and Radioactive Waste Adviser (under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016). Services are provided by an integrated team of clinical scientists, clinical technologists and administrative staff.

Main duties of the job

The post holder holdsa clear visionfor delivery and development of services and provides strategic leadership to and management of the team. The post-holder's major dutiescomprisemanagement of the radiation protection service, development of services to the customer base in response to changes in the legislative environment and developments in the fields of diagnostic radiology, nuclearmedicineand radiotherapy. The post holder acts as budget holder for the Radiation Protection Service. The post-holder will act in at least two of the statutory roles noted above. They will alsoinitiateresearch and development and takes a leading role in the teaching and training of staff and students.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable but not essential for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications and Knowledge
  • BSc in physical science, or equivalent.
  • Relevant MSc, or equivalent.
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Eligible for corporate membership of a relevant professional organisation (IPEM, BNMS etc.)
  • Fellowship of a professional organisation.
Experience
  • Certification as a Radiation Protection Adviser.
  • Certification as a Medical Physics Expert or Radioactive Waste Adviser
  • Appreciation of the wider clinical issues and their implications for diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine.
  • Teaching and training.
  • Scientific presentation and publication
  • Knowledge of the work undertaken in radiotherapy and nuclear medicine departments.
  • Design and commissioning of new facilities for delivering diagnostic radiology services.
  • Initiating and participating in research and development projects
  • Team management and performance review.
  • Project management and service development experience and qualifications.
