Overview

Robinson Contract Services Ltd is a dynamic and fast-paced haulage business committed to operational excellence and sustainable growth. We are seeking a strategically focused Finance Manager to lead our finance function and drive financial performance across the organisation.

The Role

As Head of Finance, you will take full ownership of our financial operations, lead a team, and play a key role in shaping the company’s strategic direction. You will be responsible for implementing robust financial controls, delivering insightful analysis, and supporting decision-making at the highest level.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

· Develop and execute financial strategies aligned with business objectives.

· Act as a strategic advisor to the leadership team, providing financial insights to support long-term planning.

· Drive continuous improvement in financial systems and processes.

Financial Management & Controls

· Lead the implementation and maintenance of strong internal controls and financial governance.

· Oversee all financial reporting including management accounts, P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow.

· Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements including VAT, PAYE, CIS, and corporation tax.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop a small finance team (1 x Accounts Assistant and 1 x Apprentice Accounts Assistant) to encourage high performance and professional growth.
  • Promote a collaborative, high standards work environment.

Financial Operations

· Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations including management accounts, P&L, balance sheet reconciliations, cash flow forecasting, and budget preparation.

· Take ownership of monthly management accounts with detailed commentary and analysis.

· Oversee month-end processes including balance sheet reconciliation, journals, fixed assets, and depreciation.

Financial Planning & Analysis

· Prepare budgets and forecasts, monitor performance, and conduct variance analysis.

· Identify cost-saving opportunities and support operational efficiency initiatives.

· Present management information to the leadership team to support strategic decision making.

Compliance & Controls

· Ensure timely completion of VAT returns, statutory submissions, PAYE, corporation tax, CIS returns and other compliance requirements.

· Prepare statutory accounts, liaise with auditors, and maintain compliance with HMRC and other regulatory requirements.

· Implement and maintain robust internal controls, financial policies, and processes.

Stakeholder Management

· Manage relationships with banks, suppliers, subcontractors, accountants, and other external advisors.

· Provide clear, actionable financial insights for non-financial stakeholders.

Ad Hoc Support

· Deliver ad hoc reports and financial analysis as required.

· Support business projects to optimise the finance function.

Who We’re Looking For:
  • ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified, with strong technical accounting skills.
  • Proven experience of at least 5 years, in a financial management or senior finance role, ideally within the haulage, transportation, or agricultural sectors.
  • Strong technical proficiency in accounting systems and advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, modelling).
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent leadership, analytical, and strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Strong people management and development skills.
  • Ability to work independently and take full ownership of the finance function.
