Job description

Contract: Essex Highways

Location: Chelmsford

Contract Type: Permanent

Ringway Jacobs is seeking a motivated and skilled Graduate Engineer to join our Structures Team in Chelmsford. We are looking for a candidate with strong analytical skills and, ideally, some experience in a design office environment. In this role, you'll play a key part in designing refurbishment and replacement schemes for highway structures, while also conducting periodic inspections.

Working closely with the Team Leader, Senior Engineer, and fellow graduates, you'll be responsible for delivering projects on time and within budget. Strong communication skills—both written and verbal—are essential, as you'll be preparing detailed engineering reports, contracts, and progress updates.

The Role

  • To contribute to the preparation of Highway Structure schemes
  • To prepare accurate sketches and hand calculations
  • To support survey of highway structures to input into design solutions
  • Check own and others work, to ensure high standard of own and others work
  • From time to time take part in the inspection of highway structures
  • To assist in budgetary control and ensure that financial management is undertaken throughout areas of responsibility.
  • To prepare monthly progress reports and programme updates
  • To undertake structures inspections

About You

  • Familiarity with Eurocodes and ideally with modern standards, DMRB, MCHW
  • Basic knowledge and application of Health and Safety legislation including Construction (Design & Management) Regulations
  • Conversant with Microsoft applications – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Use of AutoCAD for the creation of drawings
  • Knowledge of structural software with some familiarity
