Job description
General Practice (Healthcare) Assistant - GPA

A blended clinical and administrative role. Approximately half of working time will be spent in clinic with the remaining time supporting the GPs.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have good clinical experience in a range of skills including but not limited to: phlebotomy, blood pressure review, urinalysis, ECG, NHS Healthchecks, INR checks, smoking cessation.

The role will also involve administration duties in support of the GPs: Safeguarding administration support for the lead GPs, bowel screening results, advice letters to patients following test results i.e. QRisk, cervical screening administration, childhood immunisation administration, care home administrative support for lead GP, coordination of the home blood pressure monitoring service.

About us

Newbridge Surgery is a single site practice based in the west of Bath with approx. 9000 patients.

The role will be alongside our nursing team comprised of a Lead Practice Nurse, Practice Nurse, Nurse Associate and HCA and also supporting our 7 GPs with administrative duties.

  • All administration relating to cervical screening i.e. Prior notification lists, results, disclaimers, ceasing.

  • Redistribution of results to GPs that are in that day (am and pm)
  • Matching of results to patients/GPs
  • Administration relating to baby immunisations
  • Chasing past history to update records
  • Sending and ensuring receipt of refusal forms
  • Liaising with health visitors for refusals
  • Reviewing of Immunisation Target Reports and QOF reports to ensure compliance and high uptake
  • Clinical stock
  • Re-stocking of BEMS cupboard as per list supplied
  • Re-stocking of GPs room
  • Checking of GP room equipment to ensure they remain allocated to the correct rooms
  • Home blood pressure readings
  • Provision of home BPs to patients with BP monitoring guide and record sheet
  • Receipt of used BPs, to clean and make ready of next patient
  • Calculation of average BP and entry into notes.

  • Support to lead GP to ensure patient lists up to date and recalls monitored and completed in birth month
  • Refer to district nurses to ensure bloods etc completed ahead of recalls
  • Safeguarding Administration
  • Support to Safeguarding leads to prepare patient lists ahead of meetings
  • Adding meeting dates to TeamNet and liaising with admin to ensure on TPP clinics for clinicians to attend
  • Minutes of meetings and distribution to team
  • Liaising with social workers and health visitors to ensure information up to date

  • Competencies in all clinical areas
  • Ideally a candidate that has completed the ARRS GPA course, if not enrolment on the course can be provided for the correct candidate.
