Overview

We’re looking for a motivated and hardworking General Construction Operative (GCO) to join our team at HMS. This is a hands-on role where you’ll be part of an integrated workforce delivering first-class facilities, maintenance, and construction services for our customers and clients. You’ll carry out a wide variety of construction, environmental, and maintenance tasks – both internally and externally – while ensuring high standards of quality, efficiency, and customer care.

Responsibilities

• Carrying out general construction and maintenance activities such as property clearances, excavations, demolition, fencing, painting, groundworks, and remedial works.
• Supporting tradespeople on site and contributing to our “right first time” approach.
• Operating company vehicles, tools, and equipment safely and professionally.
• Managing materials and resources effectively to minimise waste and maximise efficiency.
• Liaising with customers, colleagues, and contractors to ensure work is completed to a high standard.
• Maintaining accurate documentation and complying with all health and safety requirements.

Qualifications

• We’re seeking someone with a strong work ethic and a flexible, customer-focused approach.
• NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in a construction or maintenance discipline.
• Experience in pointing, groundworks, or other construction-related tasks.
• Valid CSCS card at the appropriate level.
• Full UK or EU driving licence.
• Experience in maintenance, environmental clearance, or general labouring.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Good communication skills with customers and colleagues.

Interview Process

• Candidates will undergo in-person interviews, consisting of a competency-based interview.
