Overview

Job Title: Functional Skills Tutor. Location: HMP Millsike. Salary: From £30,000 per annum. Contract Type: Permanent. Hours of Work: Full-time - 38.5 hours per week. Four days per week: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM; One half-day per week: either 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM.

Role & Client Overview: Our client is a leading provider of prison education and rehabilitation programmes, committed to empowering individuals with the skills and knowledge needed for a fresh start. This is a unique opportunity to be among the first Tutors at HMP Millsike, a brand-new prison near York, shaping the education programme from Spring 2025 onwards. As a Functional Skills Maths & English Tutor, you will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills qualifications (Entry Level 1 to Level 2) to a class of 12 learners, helping them develop vital skills for their future. The role requires a creative and engaging teaching approach, with a focus on learner-centred education and restorative practices to promote personal growth and rehabilitation.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver engaging Functional Skills Maths & English lessons to learners with diverse educational needs.
  • Support learners in building numeracy and literacy skills, covering core topics such as fractions, percentages, problem-solving, reading, writing, and communication.
  • Adapt teaching methods to meet individual learning needs, including learners with neurodiverse conditions.
  • Encourage reading for pleasure to support those with low literacy skills.
  • Develop individual learning plans and monitor learner progress.
  • Create a positive and supportive classroom environment that fosters confidence, motivation, and self-development.
  • Prepare learners for exams and assessments, helping them achieve accredited qualifications.
  • Work collaboratively with prison staff and education teams to align learning with long-term employment and rehabilitation goals.
Essential Criteria
  • Level 3 qualification in Maths & English (or equivalent).
  • Experience in teaching or training in a classroom or learning environment.
  • Ability to engage and motivate learners using creative teaching methods.
  • Strong classroom management skills, with the ability to handle challenging situations constructively.
  • A passion for supporting individuals in achieving their long-term goals.
Desirable Criteria
  • A Level 5 Teaching Qualification (or equivalent) - or willingness to work towards one.
  • Experience working with neurodiverse learners or those with additional learning needs.
  • Previous experience in prison education, alternative education, or adult learning.
