Qualifications

  • Maths and English Level 2 for Vocational Tutors; Level 3 for Functional Skills Tutors.
  • Full teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (e.g., PGCE, Cert Ed, DTTLS) or willingness to work towards it.
  • Subject specialist qualification is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Identify individual needs of learners and ensure individual learning plans.
  • Prepare, deliver, and review comprehensive lesson plans.
  • Gather feedback from learners to improve curriculum content.

Our client is looking to recruit a permanent Functional Skills Maths Tutor who can do more than just deliver training but can also engage and inspire learners with little or no prior education.

Based on-site at HMP Millsike, you will deliver Maths and Functional Skills up to level 2, working with small groups of prison-based learners to develop their skills, knowledge, and behaviours while supporting their long-term goals and aspirations.

HMP Millsike is a groundbreaking Category C male prison that opened in 2025, marking a significant step in the UK government's plan to modernize the prison estate and address overcrowding. Located in the village of Full Sutton, near York, this facility emphasizes rehabilitation, sustainability, and security. It is the first UK prison to operate entirely on electricity, utilizing solar panels and heat pump technology to reduce energy consumption by 75% compared to traditional prisons.

Their Tutors ensure appropriate training plans are in place, providing advice and guidance when required, while delivering high-quality courses that engage learners and help them reach their potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identifying individual needs of learners and ensuring each has an individual learning plan aligned with their employment goals.
  • Reviewing learner progression regularly to ensure training meets their needs.
  • Preparing, delivering, and reviewing comprehensive lesson plans addressing training needs, including literacy, numeracy, language, and social/employability barriers.
  • Gathering feedback from learners and other sources to review and improve curriculum content.
  • Engaging and motivating individuals and groups to increase retention.
  • Completing administration tasks such as registers, enrolment forms, ILPs, reviews, and awarding body documentation in line with deadlines.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and hosts to support learner progression towards qualifications and employment.
  • Meeting contractual KPIs for success and performance.
  • Prison-based roles are 100% site-based, involving face-to-face contact with prisoners.

Requirements:

  • Maths and English Level 2 for Vocational Tutors; Level 3 for Functional Skills Tutors.
  • Full teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (e.g., PGCE, Cert Ed, DTTLS) or willingness to work towards it. DESIRABLE
  • Subject specialist qualification. DESIRABLE
  • Successful applicants will need to undertake a DBS or DS check or Prison Security Clearance and provide proof of Right to Work in the UK.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Confidence in using diverse presentation, facilitation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage challenging situations calmly and effectively, especially in group settings.
  • Understanding of Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, and Data Protection policies, with attention to off-site activity safety requirements.
  • A passion for motivating and leading by example to support learners in achieving qualifications.
  • Understanding of the OFSTED framework (EIF) and ability to meet standards.
