Job description

Strathmore Estates is the collective name for the historic estates of the Earls of Strathmore & Kinghorne. Located at Glamis, Angus, the estate amounts to 14,500 acres. The estate comprises of a number of enterprises covering a wide variation of industries. Glamis Castle, the jewel in the crown attracts 110,000 people to view the castle and gardens as well as hosting events throughout the year. Our farming business farms 6500 acres of land farming arable crops and a 300 suckler cow herd. Our forestry team maintain the woodland surrounding Glamis village which makes it look so special. The sporting team operates a small rough shoot, a more commercial simulated clay pigeon shoot as well as managing the deer on the estate. Finally, the property team manages the let property on the estate, this comprises of residential property, let farms as well as smaller commercial lets.

We are currently seeking to recruit an Estate Forester to the Estate, this is a hands‑on role within a team of two. The estate woods amount to 1750 acres ranging from continuous cover to small commercial forestry blocks. Estate forestry work is varied and the successful candidate will require a can‑do attitude towards the role.

Description of the role:
  • Small scale felling of parkland trees and windblown trees
  • Planting of small plantations
  • Maintenance, spraying and beat up of new plantations
  • Fencing of new plantations with both rabbit net and deer net.
  • Management of forestry contractors to include health and safety compliance
  • Survey and inspect trees, managing safety issues as they arise
  • Liaise with timbers agents regarding sale of timber
  • Working with external foresters responsible for the successful implementation of the 20 year LTFP
  • Management of invasive species, including spraying
  • Management of H&S for the department
  • Deliver training/tool box talks to upskill staff and mentor the next generation
  • Work to protect wildlife habitats, water quality and soil stability, whilst managing forest ecosystems to ensure long‑term health and biodiversity
  • The role may/could encompass undertaking tree surgery work
Skills preferred/required:
  • A qualification in tree health surveys
  • Chainsaw operator with appropriate tickets
  • Relevant spraying tickets
  • Experience of tractor driving
  • Skilled in the operation of small forestry equipment to include items such as winches forwarder trailers, chippers, post knockers.
  • Must hold valid UK drivers’ license.
