Job Title: Ecologist

Location: Cadder Yard, Glasgow (Hybrid & Multi‑site Across Scotland)

Salary: Competitive + Benefits

Employment Type: Permanent, Full Time

Hours: 35 hours per week

We are working in partnership with a leading engineering and defence organisation to recruit an experienced Ecologist into their expanding sustainability and environmental team. This position is based out of Cadder Yard in Glasgow, with regular travel to sites across Scotland. Applications are welcomed from candidates with strong ecological field skills who enjoy working outdoors and supporting practical delivery as well as compliance and reporting.

About the Role

This is a hands‑on role where you will be directly involved in delivering the environmental compliance and sustainability strategy for major rail projects. You will support operational teams on the ground, ensuring project activities meet environmental legislation, ISO 14001 standards, and wider sustainability objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist environmental and sustainability advice to internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Lead the management and monitoring of ecological features, including protected species such as bats and badgers
  • Develop and maintain the site Environmental Management Plan, Environmental Risk Profile, and Aspects & Impacts Register
  • Drive continuous improvement within the compliance management system
  • Support environmental emergency preparedness and response planning
  • Conduct regular field work in varied outdoor environments and weather conditions
  • Travel across Scotland as required, including occasional night work to support project needs
Skills & Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as an Ecologist
  • Confident with field-based ecological surveying, including experience with protected species (e.g. bats, badger setts)
  • Strong understanding of UK environmental regulations and compliance requirements
  • Flexible approach to working hours and travel demands
  • Full UK driving licence essential
Qualifications

Relevant degree or qualification in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related disciplines

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of work, the ability to obtain UK Security Clearance may be required.
