Job description

Mott Macdonald Bentley (MMB) is the design and build unit of global engineering consultancy Mott Macdonald. We are currently looking to recruit an Ecologist to support us in delivering work within our United Utilities framework.

MMB is one of seven partners supporting United Utilities in delivering £3bn worth of upgrades to critical infrastructure assets, including water and wastewater treatment sites, pumping stations, and reservoirs. This investment also includes reducing storm overflows through the largest spill reduction programme in the UK, protecting over 500km of rivers and bathing waters within the Northwest during the AMP8 period.

We seek an Ecologist with experience in field surveys using UK Habitat assessment, Biodiversity Net Gain condition assessment, and protected species surveys. Knowledge of wildlife legislation, planning processes, and/or EIA/HRA assessments, along with survey experience, is essential.

Responsibilities include:
  • Leading ecological projects benefiting consumers, communities, and the environment.
  • Conducting surveys and assessments in line with relevant guidance.
  • Preparing high-standard reports.
  • Mentoring junior staff and reviewing their work.
  • Assessing and implementing biodiversity net gain strategies.
Candidate requirements:
  • A degree in Ecology or a related field.
  • Chartership or relevant experience to achieve it.
  • At least one protected species survey licence (preferably for bats or great crested newts) or experience with mitigation licences.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Experience mentoring staff and quality checking.

We offer a competitive salary based on experience, with core benefits including pension contributions, flexible leave options, insurance coverages, parental leave, professional subscriptions, discounts, and more.

This role is employed by Mott MacDonald but involves working across the joint venture with JN Bentley and Mott MacDonald colleagues. We value diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from all backgrounds. Flexible and agile working arrangements are supported.
