As a Digital Forensic Investigator, your role will be the forensic examination and retrieval of evidence and intelligence from digital devices and related media. Your role on any day may include:
Responsibilities
- To carry out forensic examinations of digital devices and media, and secure and retrieve relevant data in accordance with national and local guidelines, using proprietary and bespoke forensic hardware and software.
- Extract data using suitable applications for the Officer In the Case (OIC) to view, facilitate the OIC’s viewing of the data and advise accordingly so the OIC can understand the evidential significance and use the material for further investigation and presentation in court.
- Prepare reports and statements, and maintain a working knowledge of the rules of evidence relating to seizure, preservation and admissibility. Advise CPS/Counsel on digital evidence and, if necessary, present evidence in court in a clear and comprehensible manner.
- Provide technical advice and assistance to colleagues in relation to forensic examinations, advising and guiding before, during and after interviews, and evaluate the validity of statements provided by suspects. Assist the OIC in identifying potential weaknesses in statements.
- All applicants must be aware that they will have to work with child abuse material on a frequent basis; internal processes and external assessments will support your wellbeing in this area.

Qualifications
- Essential: Educated to QCF Level 6 in Computer Studies or BEng/BSc in a related engineering or technical subject, such as software development, electronic engineering or information systems; or work experience in a digital forensic subject deemed to bring the postholder to a comparable level.
- Work experience in digital forensics, e.g., in another law enforcement or private digital forensics lab.
- Able to demonstrate a comprehensive investigative/analytical capability.
- Experienced with a wide range of operating systems, e.g., Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and/or iOS mobile devices.
- Experience producing detailed technical reports.
- Comprehensive working knowledge of a wide variety of file systems.
- Desirable: Comprehensive working knowledge of digital forensic software.
