We have an exciting opportunity for a proactive and enthusiastic nurse to join our short stay team as a deputy ward manager. Short stay is a 32 bedded ward caring for medical, surgical, orthopedic and ENT patients.

The post holder will have excellent communication skills and have the ability, drive and enthusiasm to motivate and drive a new team to provide high quality patient care and experience.

The Deputy Ward Manager will assist the ward manager with the day to day management of the clinical areas including assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards.

The Deputy Ward Manager will also be expected to take responsibility for the management of the ward whilst the ward manager is absent from the ward.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Ward Sister/Deputy Charge Nurse is vital in supporting the management of the clinical area including assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards.

They will facilitate innovative and evidence-based nursing/midwifery practice through professional leadership and supporting the clinical team and act as a credible and professional role model and encourage and empower other staff to develop both personally and professionally and achieve their maximum potential.

The Deputy Ward Sister/Deputy Charge Nurse will liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team and facilitate a collaborative approach to patient care. They will report directly to the Ward Manager.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • Level 1 Registered Nurse
  • Diploma in Nursing or evidence of recent relevant CPD at diploma level
  • Evidence of post-registration development in the relevant speciality
  • Qualified mentor (ENB 998 or equivalent) or equivalent mentorship award
  • Qualified NVQ Assessor (A1 or equivalent)
  • Degree in Nursing or working towards a degree
Occupational Experience
  • 2 years Post Reg experience in relevant specialty with experience at E grade
  • Training / experience as Clinical Supervisor
  • Recruitment and interviewing skills
  • Up to date mandatory training in Fire, Infection Control, BLS and Moving and Handling
  • Training in handling and administration of blood
  • Experience of managing a team or area within a ward / department
  • Involvement in change management
  • Experience of critiquing clinical evidence
