Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a qualified Accountant or finalist to join the Financial Management team at Walsall Healthcare Trust, taking the lead with one of our key Clinical Divisions and supporting the attainment of the Trust's financial performance.

The post holder will provide financial support and advice on behalf of the Divisional Business Accountant to a Division with a budget of circa £50-60m. The role involves dealing with complex, emotive and contentious issues, constraining managers to ensure financial targets are met, and advising managers and Directors on how to optimise finance and other resources for increased efficiency and service improvement. The post holder will be key to developing commercial awareness within the clinical divisions and understanding the linkages between financial and other performance targets.

Main duties of the job
  • Work as a business partner to the Division to ensure value for money, appropriate financial control and development of business cases.
  • Produce Monthly Management Accounts for the services supported and present these positions at regular meetings.
  • Engage in challenging conversations to ensure efficiency targets are achieved.
  • Take responsibility for management, development, training and performance of staff accountable to them.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. In addition to inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital, a wide range of services are provided in the community. The Trust has continued to upgrade facilities, including a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit. A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre opened in March 2023, providing additional clinical space and improved emergency care facilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Ensure Divisions are fully aware of all aspects of financial control, probity and stewardship, including standing financial instructions and policies. Ensure the Division's financial records provide a true and fair view and meet the Trust's corporate reporting requirements, external statutory returns and accounting policies and legislation.
