Job description

Guided by our values of Respect and Integrity, Customer Centricity, Care, and Teamwork, this dual role combines the responsibilities of Deputy Depot Driver Team Leader and HGV Driver. Reporting to the Depot Driver Team Leader or Transport Manager, you will be competent inleading a team of drivers, confidently managing the depot in the absence of the Depot Driver Team Leader, and ensuring the safe and timely transportation of goods.

You will assist with loading/unloading vehicles, lead by example on the road, and take a hands‑on approach to operations. This position requires strong leadership skills, a commitment to safety, excellent driving ability, and a valid HGV licence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Depot Driver Team Leader in supervising and motivating a team of drivers to meet performance targets and objectives.
  • Step in to cover duties during periods of annual leave or absence.
  • Assist with scheduling shifts and routes to optimise efficiency and meet customer demands.
  • Assist drivers with loading/unloading vehicles each morning and ensure all drivers are briefed on their routes.
  • Be the last to leave the depot, ensuring operations are complete before departure.
  • Deliver goods to customers where reasonably practicable, leading by example with shortened routes.
  • Use depot and transport reporting tools such as Optimoroute, Fleetloc8, Checksafe, Brightpearl, and Google Sheets.
  • Liaise with driver agencies for cover as required, including timesheet checks.
  • Co‑ordinate with the Transport Planner to ensure timely pickups and deliveries.
  • Support monitoring of driver performance and vehicle compliance.
  • Assist with managing returns and collections at the depot using bespoke systems.
Driving and Delivery
  • Operate HGVs (Class 1 or Class 2) to transport goods safely to designated destinations.
  • Follow designated routes and schedules, ensuring timely and accurate deliveries.
  • Demonstrate impeccable driving standards and compliance with all statutory and company regulations.
  • Ensure all goods are loaded, secured, and unloaded safely to prevent damage.
  • Maintain professional and courteous behaviour with customers, clients, and road users.
Safety and Compliance
  • Conduct activities in line with Health & Safety standards to protect yourself and colleagues.
  • Carry out pre‑ and post‑trip vehicle inspections and ensure roadworthiness.
  • Adhere to UK and EU driving regulations, including the Working Time Directive.
  • Use Tachograph and driver apps to ensure compliance with legal and company driving rules.
  • Investigate and report accidents, incidents, or defects promptly.
  • Ensure vehicles remain safe, clean, tidy, and smoke‑free.
  • Lift, move, wrap, and manage products and equipment safely.
Vehicle Maintenance and Documentation
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance and report issues or defects promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records of deliveries, mileage, and inspections.
  • Complete delivery paperwork and obtain necessary signatures.
  • Ensure vehicles are presentable and loads remain secure at all times.
Customer Service
  • Provide exceptional service, addressing customer enquiries or concerns professionally.
  • Demonstrate courtesy and support at every stage of delivery.
  • Represent Leader Online as a brand ambassador with respect and integrity.
Company Objectives and Contribution
  • Support business and individual KPIs, ensuring targets are met.
  • Provide KPI data entry on agreed systems.
  • Contribute to service levels and departmental targets.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement projects.
  • Actively seek opportunities to maximise vehicle fill, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Working Conditions
  • Shift patterns may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Long hours and overnight trips may be required.
  • Variable weather conditions.
  • Physical demands include lifting, loading, and unloading goods.
  • Valid HGV Class 1 or Class 2 licence.
  • Digital Tachograph Card.
  • Current FLT operating certificate and experience as an FLT operator.
  • Proven experience in a similar transport or logistics leadership role.
  • Excellent knowledge of transport regulations, road networks, and safety standards.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Proficiency with transport management systems and reporting tools.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for vehicle checks and minor repairs.
  • Ability to work under pressure, independently, and as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual, with a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Experience in long‑distance driving and load securing techniques.
