Data Center Technician
Location: Sunderland, UK
Job Type: Full-time
Purpose of the Job
- Assist the Data Centre Management Team in delivering a customer‑focused, cost‑effective and efficient service.
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance, reactive works to building infrastructure/plant and equipment in accordance with agreed service levels and respond to and escalated site engineering emergencies.
- Undertake small installation works, project works, repairs to building fabric, and handyman duties to meet contractual and legal obligations.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure routine maintenance is carried out on all building plant, equipment and systems to meet and exceed expectations and agreed service level agreements.
- Carry out fault diagnosis on mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Respond to Building Management System alarms, escalated as required.
- Issue and enforce appropriate controls within the Permit to Work systems.
- Follow ACOP’s applicable to the maintenance industry.
- Maintain suitable spares to support maintenance activity.
- Prepare Method Statements and Risk Assessments for all tasks to ensure safe working practices.
- Supervise engineering subcontractors and ensure they comply with contractual commitments and site operating processes.
- Develop good working relationships with all members of CBRE staff and client staff.
- Provide a safe & healthy working environment and comply with all Company policies and site requirements.
- Maintain a professional image of CBRE and deliver excellence in customer service.
- Commit to personal development and lifelong learning to maintain professional and technical skills.
- Accurately update logbooks, shift hand‑over and client reporting.
- Be flexible to work overtime to cover other engineers' holiday leave when required.
- Identify and report potential hazards.
Accountabilities
- Accountable to Engineering Services Manager and Site Supervisor.
- No directly reporting staff.
- No direct budgetary responsibility.
- Maintain appropriate stocks of spares and consumables and ensure secure storage and controlled issue.
Personal Specification
Education
A good basic education is essential, with good written and spoken English, Mathematics and IT skills.
Training
- Formal training in mechanical and electrical services maintenance.
- City & Guilds 236 parts 1 & 2 (or later) 17th Edition or equivalent qualification.
- Up‑to‑date skills on building management systems, ACOP’s, fire and environmental control, building control, and health and safety.
- Formal health and safety training (IOSH, etc.) and Safe Operation of High Voltage Equipment (S4).
Experience
- Experience of critical environment facilities maintenance (e.g., UPS systems, BMS operation, emergency standby generators, testing of electrical systems, dual‑fed systems).
- Comprehensive mechanical and electrical engineering experience, undertaking reactive and planned preventative maintenance.
- Sound understanding and experience of meeting health and safety obligations with regard to maintenance activities.
- Appointed HV/AP, with the ability to create switching schedules.
- Prior experience working in data centres.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Organised with good written English skills.
- Strong computer skills, with the ability to use Excel, Word, Outlook and log PPM’s, work reports and incidences on the client’s system.
- Willingness to learn and develop both technical knowledge and understanding of local organisational systems and processes.

Circumstances
- Reliable to work a 4 on 4 off shift pattern (12‑hour day and night shifts) including weekends, Christmas and bank holidays.
- Must be able to work alone as well as in a team.
- Comfortable interacting with client management and handling reasonable requests directly from the client.
- Must be able to pass mandatory security clearance.
