Responsibilities
  • Use a range of tools and techniques, depending on the type of data and the data bearer; which might include high-level network captures (Ethernet, Wi-Fi), on-board data bearers (UART, I2C), or data at rest on a system (data logs, configuration files).
  • Use industry standard tools for analysis. If required, write your own tools for protocol and data analysis and extend existing tools.
  • Be a persistent and inquisitive puzzle solver, able to pick apart the intricacies of communication components, while maintaining a systems level understanding of the whole device.
Safety, Security and Compliance
  • Safety at Dstl: Accountable for ensuring safe and secure work; understand and meet defined accountabilities as written in Dstl policy; demonstrate expected behaviours; ensure appropriate training and knowledge for self and direct reports.
  • Develop a working environment supportive of Dstl’s approach to security, health, wellbeing, safety and environmental management; be aware of the downstream impact of actions on those outside immediate control; implement Dstl policies and ensure compliance with the Management System.
  • Security and Vetting: This role requires high security clearance. The position is open to UK nationals only; some roles may require Developed Vetting and a 5/10 year UK residence history. See the vetting charter and baseline checks as part of recruitment.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Essential: Experience with at least one high-level programming language (e.g., C/C++ or Python).
  • Knowledge of computer networking with an interest in analysing communication protocols.
  • At least one of the following:
  • – Awareness of compression, obfuscation and/or encryption techniques;
  • – Knowledge of data encoding techniques (e.g., raw binary formats, base64, Unicode);
  • – Experience using tools for packet, data and/or binary analysis (e.g., Wireshark, 010 Editor, Ghidra).

Desirable qualifications include a relevant STEM degree or equivalent skills/experience. A clear aptitude for understanding how technologies and devices communicate, store data, and how components interact is valuable.

Working Arrangements and Location

To do this role successfully, attendance at a Dstl location is required, with 60% of working time on-site at Government Departments, MoD or Delivery and Mission Partner premises.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: £29,001 - £33,658, dependent on experience and skills. A Civil Service Pension with employer contributions applies. The role may include a skill-set allowance (£1,000-£4,500 per annum) payable three months after joining.
