Overview

One of my local government clients is seeking a Customer Service Officer to support its Street Cleaning and Environmental Services team. This is a practical, hands-on role that also involves supervisory responsibilities across various public service operations such as street cleaning, waste collection, highways, grounds maintenance, and bereavement services.

You will work as part of a team, ensuring high service standards while interacting with the public, supporting operatives, and ensuring vehicles and equipment are maintained and operated safely.

Responsibilities
Street Cleaning Services
  • Supervise and support operatives as required.
  • Clean streets, pavements, and back lanes according to scheduled routes.
  • Operate and maintain Council vehicles, including daily checks and compliance with the Driver's Handbook.
  • Respond to emergencies and ensure positive engagement with the public.
Highways & Drainage Services
  • Drive and operate machinery and vehicles, including the Gully Machine.
  • Support drainage and highway works, including kerbing, tarmac patching, and reinstatement.
  • Assist with fence, street furniture, and culvert maintenance.
  • Carry out verge maintenance including grass cutting, hedge trimming, and spraying.
Grounds Maintenance & Bereavement Services
  • Maintain sports fields, courts, and amenity areas (grass cutting, pitch marking, weeding).
  • Clean and maintain associated facilities and buildings (e.g. pavilions, toilets).
  • Support cemetery operations: grave preparation, interments, plot records, and liaison with Funeral Directors and families.
  • Maintain cemetery grounds, drainage systems, and site security.
Recycling & Waste Services
  • Drive and operate waste collection vehicles, ensuring safe navigation of designated routes.
  • Supervise the collection crew and assist with loading if required.
  • Ensure waste/recyclables meet required quality and contamination standards.
  • Return assisted collection paperwork and report any issues to supervisors.
  • Communicate with the public regarding waste strategy when needed.
Requirements
  • Experience in environmental or public services preferred (e.g. street cleaning, grounds maintenance, waste, highways).
  • Strong awareness of Health & Safety protocols.
  • Full UK driving licence (essential for vehicle-based duties).
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to follow schedules and work as part of a team.
