We are looking for a proactive and creative Communications Assistant to join our fast-paced, forward-thinking communications team. Based at MOD Lyneham, this role helps shape the voice of The Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering (DSEME). Working closely with the Communications Manager, you will support the day-to-day delivery of communications, press, and public relations — driving awareness, safeguarding reputation, and ensuring our message cuts through with clarity and impact. If you are passionate about storytelling, media engagement, and making a real difference, this could be the role for you.
Responsibilities
- Support the day-to-day delivery of communications, press, and public relations to drive awareness and safeguard reputation, ensuring messages are clear and impactful.
- Develop and deliver engaging communication strategies that spotlight our three units — 8 Training Battalion REME, The REME Arms School, and No 4 School of Technical Training.
- Craft compelling content and build strong relationships across DSEME, the Defence College of Technical Training, and the wider Defence community.
- Contribute to corporate and internal communications, support policy updates, announcements, and crisis communications, and maintain consistency in tone and alignment with MOD branding.
- Collaborate with the Mitie Communications Manager and unit teams to contribute to multi-channel campaigns that convey the breadth of our training delivery.
- Monitor media coverage and sentiment, using insights to inform recommendations and identify high-impact opportunities to raise the profile of units and personnel.
- Support the coordination of internal and external visits, including liaising with media, photographers, MT, and the Mess.
- Support other team members and contribute to a safe working environment.
Qualifications
- Natural storyteller with experience in PR, media relations, or communications; able to create content that resonates, with strong writing skills and good judgement.
- Ability to navigate reputational risk with clarity and confidence; proactive, hands-on, and able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in the Defence sector is a bonus; more importantly, you are driven by purpose, eager to make a positive impact, and ready to amplify the voice and reputation of the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.
