About us

The Medicines Evaluation programme at NICE advises the NHS and patients on the clinical and cost effectiveness of selected technologies and their optimal use in practice. We jointly apply selection criteria with the Department of Health to decide which technologies to appraise. While our recommendations are backed by a funding direction from the Secretary of State, they are not mandatory instructions. However, practitioners are expected to consider them, and patient access is protected by the NHS Constitution. Our guidance is valued and has demonstrable impact via our web-based database.

The Planning and Operations team supports business planning and administration across the directorate. This includes scheduling the work programme, managing guidance reviews, stakeholder engagement, and supporting topic delivery teams. Our committee operations function provides secretariat services and manages the Medicines Evaluation Committees, acting as a liaison between the Committees and NICE.
