AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.

The position requires regular travel between multiple facilities within Thames Valley. The successful candidate will be based within easy reach of these key locations and must be comfortable with frequent inter‑site movement as part of their core responsibilities.

Key Job Responsibilities

Controls Engineer (CE) deploys, maintains BMS (Building Management System) & EPMS (Electrical Power Monitoring System) in AWS leased/colocation data centres. The CE coordinates with AWS DCEO (Data Center Engineering Operations) teams to implement new builds, upgrades, etc. and ensures high availability and high resiliency of these control systems.

  • Development of control panel bill of materials (BOM).
  • Creation of ISA data sheets for temperature, level, flow, and pressure transmitters as well as for control valves, positioners, analytical instruments, and other types of instrumentation.
  • Preparation of drawings for control panels, power distribution, junction boxes, including general arrangement, internal layout, schematics, interconnection, and wire diagrams.
  • Development of logic diagrams in the International Automation format for complex logic devices such as programmable logic controllers and distributed control systems.
  • Preparation of cable routing plans and schedules.
  • Inspections, testing, and commissioning of facility systems.
  • Work individually and as part of a team to develop new products, support existing products, test, and evaluate equipment.
  • Provide technical assistance to internal customers as needed.
  • Coordinate project work internally within the department and externally with other departments to ensure on‑time completion of projects within budget.
A Day in the Life

The Controls Engineer’s day may begin with deployment efforts including on‑site site management works, directing controls vendors for installation/commissioning works, and ensuring quality and on‑time delivery of tasks and projects. While managing service works, the CE coordinates with operations teams for permits and engages vendors or performs services confirming to the task lists.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in vendor management.
  • Experience in a data center or other critical environment.
  • Experience in data center engineering or operations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in construction or project management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent engineering science plus 3+ years of relevant controls experience, OR 8+ years of relevant controls experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 3+ years of on‑site experience with industrial controls in a critical environment (data center, pharmaceutical, oil & gas, petrochemical, etc.), designing, configuring, installing, and/or servicing [Honeywell: Tridium Niagara, Building Controls/Trend, Schneider Electric, PowerLogic/Struxureware, Distech, Inductive Automation: Ignition].
  • 2+ years of general project or vendor management experience (request for proposals, bidding, change orders, quality control, and RFI and submittal tracking) associated with construction and project execution (creating, reviewing, and understanding engineering documentation, electrical diagrams, method of procedure, risk assessments, and standard operating procedures).
