Overview

Consultant Psychiatrist - Female Eating Disorders. We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Hospital Ealing and provide senior medical cover on our Sunrise Ward, a 14-bed highly specialised eating disorder service for women.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients as required and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward and ensuring their good quality in accordance with GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines. In this role, your expertise will be the driving force for life-changing treatment, fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and a first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, a psychologist and an occupational therapist. There is an opportunity to progress to Medical Director Level through our management schemes.

Main duties

Cygnet Hospital Ealing has a Good overall CQC rating and provides a welcoming environment and personalised treatment for up to 23 service users with an eating disorder or personality disorder across two wards. Sunrise provides a highly specialised eating disorder service for up to 14 women, including those with extremely low BMIs, focusing on attaining a healthy BMI and preparing for a return to home. The service offers a phased treatment pathway, with treatment driven by a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach that respects individual needs.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and have overall medical responsibility for patient treatment, liaising closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers, etc.). He/She will act as a positive role model and maintain a constructive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and staff.

The service offers a phased treatment pathway and emphasizes collaborative treatment with the women we support, guided by a multidisciplinary team. In this role, your expertise will underpin life-changing treatment, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, a psychologist and an occupational therapist. Main duties and responsibilities
  • Lead on the provision of high-quality care to Sunrise Ward service users
  • Act as a positive role model and maintain a constructive attitude towards patients, their families and staff
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations of service users
  • Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis and treatment
  • Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews and clinical audits
  • Lead risk assessment, risk management and embed clinical governance within the service
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and managers hearings and attend hearings
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave as required
  • Maintain patient records
  • Maintain regular communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, directors and other concerned bodies; maintain appropriate reports
  • Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to GMC, Department of Health and Royal College of Psychiatrists standards for CPD
  • Contribute to the 1:2 on-call rota
