Job description
Overview

Appointee is expected to be competent to offer patients sentinel lymph node biopsy surgery and nodal block dissections of the axilla and groin. Successful candidate is expected to be versatile in all aspects of plastic surgery trauma requiring input during on call.

New appointee will work closely with colleagues from Dermatology, Oncology and Radiotherapy departments and be part of a truly multidisciplinary skin cancer service. The post attracts a 1:12 on‑call commitment alongside a 1:12 Trauma Consultant of the week rota. Part of this job will incorporate clinical duties at the Royal Surrey County Hospital (one day a week) aiming to facilitate network pathway for skin cancer patients and offer general plastic surgery support.

The appointee is expected to develop and undertake research in the field of skin cancer surgery, undertake teaching duties of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff as well as allied health professionals. Participation in audit and research and Trust clinical governance programme will be essential.

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospital group in 2021, while remaining as two separate Trusts, and will collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education and training of our 17,000‑strong workforce.

Responsibilities
  • Be able to undertake block dissections of the axilla and groin, including above the inguinal ligament resections.
  • Undertake or be trained in electrochemotherapy.
  • Work closely with Dermatology, Oncology and Radiotherapy in providing melanoma and non‑melanoma skin cancer.
  • Participate in the emergency workload and be competent in management of adult and paediatric hand trauma.
  • Liaise with consultant colleagues to provide internal cover for annual and/or sick leave for on‑call duties; under exceptional circumstances this may require some flexibility in the appointee’s hours.
  • Participate in a Trauma Consultant of the week model (four times a year) when normal morning commitments are replaced with ward round and trauma cover.
  • Contribute to the teaching of junior medical staff and medical students.
  • The post holder will also be expected to take an active role in educational supervision for core and specialty surgical trainees.
  • Take an interest in research.
  • Actively contribute towards quality improvement in the Plastic Surgery service.
  • Undertake such duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and the needs of the service.
  • Act in line with GMC Good Medical Practice, including Duty of Candour.
