Job description
Overview

UHB are looking to appoint a substantive Consultant Hand Surgeon with specialist interests in complex reconstruction and peripheral nerve surgery (PNS) to join the Hand & Peripheral Nerve Surgery Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). The appointee will contribute to the department’s complex reconstruction work and PNS work. Subspecialist expertise in limb reconstruction, including microsurgical tissue transfer and peripheral nerve surgery, is essential.

Location: Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Mindelsohn Way, Birmingham, West Midlands, B15 2TH.

Department: Hand & Peripheral Nerve Surgery Department, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. QEHB is a major tertiary centre for hand surgery and a Level 1 Trauma Centre.

Activity: The appointee will participate in the hand on‑call rota, support PNS referrals, and contribute to the hand trauma service, which handles a high volume of cases in the UK. QEHB is the base for The Centre for Defence Medicine.

Research and education: The department has an international hand fellowship programme and a growing research programme; strong commitment to training, education and research.

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in delivering a comprehensive hand service with the highest standards of care.
  • Plan service delivery with forward‑looking, innovative practice; contribute to corporate and strategic objectives.
  • Participate in mandatory training and clinical governance; engage in clinical audit and maintain excellence in patient care.
  • Deputise for colleagues as required, including cover during leave or short notice absences.
  • Support the hand trauma service and revascularisation/replantation cases from the West Midlands region.
  • Contribute to the development of service improvements and business case development to support these initiatives.
  • Human Resources: Manage performance of staff through coaching and mentoring; conduct annual appraisals aligned to a Job Plan; contribute to teaching of patients, undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Continuing Medical Education: Attend departmental meetings; maintain CME standards and specialist accreditation; time and financial support provided in line with the Trust Leave Policy.
Qualifications
  • FRCS (Plast or Orth) or equivalent.
  • CCT/CESR in plastic or orthopaedic surgery, or within 6 months at time of interview.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Completion of BSSH or FESSH Diploma in Hand Surgery or equivalent.
