Job Description
The main duties and responsibilities of the Design Engineer (Civils) are outlined as follows:
- Carry out preliminary site inspections to identify constructability issues, access, existing services etc.
- Supervise sub‑contractors on site and record relevant SI information.
- Ensure HSQE documentation is in place for all site work – RAMS, SSWP’s, permits etc.
- Source quotations from suppliers/sub‑contractors and provide input to cost estimation for target cost submissions and value engineering workshops.
- Liaise with design manager to evaluate potential alignment options for pipelines, tanks, pumping stations, or treatment facilities etc.
- Consider constructability, sequencing, and temporary works implications at a high level.
- Develop initial layout drawings (general arrangement of treatment works, pipelines, structures, and access).
- Liaise with process, mechanical, and electrical engineers to ensure civil design integrates with process requirements.
- Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews/meetings to align civil works with process/electrical/mechanical requirements.
- Provide input to identify health & safety risks at early design stage.
- Liaise with procurement team to raise purchase orders.
- Attendance at civil/structural design meetings with consultants.
Qualifications
The main knowledge, skills and experience required of the Design Engineer (Civils) are outlined as follows:
- Understanding of civil engineering principles and their application to water and wastewater infrastructure (treatment works, pipelines, pumping stations).
- Familiarity with UE design standards, codes and guidance.
- Awareness of geotechnical considerations (foundations, ground conditions, settlement etc.).
- Understanding of construction methods, constructability issues, and sequencing at a preliminary stage.
- Technical design skills – ability to prepare conceptual layouts, GA drawings, pipe layouts etc.
- CAD/BIM proficiency – ability to use tools such as AutoCAD & BIM 360 for preliminary designs.
- Collaboration & coordination – working closely with process, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineers in a multidisciplinary team.
- Communication skills – producing clear design reports, technical notes, presentations etc.
- Risk awareness – ability to identify and communicate key design and construction risks early in the process.
- Previous involvement in water and wastewater projects (e.g., treatment works, pumping stations, pipeline schemes, drainage networks).
- Experience in producing technical documentation – design reports, drawings, risk registers, and input to cost estimates.
- Ability to source quotations and provide input to target cost.
- Experience with digital design software (i.e., CAD, BIM 360).
