Overview

A vacancy at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. A shift/team leader role providing clinical leadership and management support, developing and evaluating best practice within the department. The post-holder will deputise for the department manager as required.

Please note that interviews for this post will take place the week commencing 29/09/2025. Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report from their current UK occupational health provider or UK GP.

Ward and Role

A position has arisen on Ward 34 for a Band 6 clinical ward sister/charge nurse. Previous experience within haematology is essential, and the successful applicant must be competent in the delivery of chemotherapy and have an assessor qualification. Ward 34 is the tertiary centre for Coventry and Warwickshire for treatment of patients with haematological malignancies requiring intensive inpatient chemotherapy. We are an Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Centre, Haemophilia Treatment Centre and Haemoglobinopathy Centre.

Ward Environment

The ward provides inpatient, day case and clinic facilities in one place to minimise exposure of immunocompromised patients. Staff work in a dynamic multidisciplinary team. The majority of inpatients have haematological malignancies or related complications, with additional expertise in other complex patient groups, including bleeding disorders and sickle cell disease. We deliver curative and palliative treatments and support patients throughout their journey, including end of life care.

All nurses are trained in or are receiving training in venepuncture, cannulation, management of tunneled CVCs and delivery of chemotherapy and stem cells. Ward 34 is a busy ward with strong patient relationships.

Main Duties / Responsibilities
  1. Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  2. Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team, including situations where comprehension may be difficult.
  3. Act as a skilled practitioner and clinical leader, providing support to the management team and participating in service/policy development.
  4. Be responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited, involving patients and users.
  5. Organise cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate.
  6. Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including complex patient monitoring, equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
  7. Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required.
  8. Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data.
  9. Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring high but unpredictable levels of physical effort according to patient need, referring to a senior member of staff when appropriate.
  10. Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
  11. Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy to protect staff and service users from known hazards.
  12. Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control.
