Job summary

The Radiological Sciences Group in the Portsmouth Hospitals Medical Physics department is seeking to appoint a Band 8B clinical scientist to join a friendly team who provide comprehensive physics support to other healthcare professionals within and outside of Portsmouth. The post is based at Queen Alexandra hospital with some travel to other hospitals/centres.

Main duties of the job

The ideal candidate will be HCPC registered and an accredited Radiation Protection Advisor and Medical Physics Expert (both for diagnostic radiology). Expertise as a Laser Protection Advisor is also desirable. However, candidates who do not have experience in all areas are encouraged to apply as role development can be discussed and developed. You will join a team of 11 clinical scientists, technicians and trainees. As RPA you will have responsibility for specific diagnostic X-ray modalities according to your areas of expertise and as MPE you will join other MPEs supporting a wide range of X-ray modalities across several hospitals and healthcare clients. There will be opportunities to work closely with clinical staff to optimise staff safety and patient imaging in these areas, to ensure high quality and safe imaging.

The Medical Physics department in Portsmouth is an accredited training centre for scientists. There are strong links with Portsmouth, UCL and Surrey universities. The group in which you will work provides opportunities for staff to be involved in national professional groups / working parties and encourages staff to present and publish scientific work in support of their professional development. We can offer the successful candidate the opportunity to undertake the Higher Specialist Scientific Training programme or discuss part-time PhD opportunities.

Portsmouth is a developing, historic, university seaside city with mild, sunny climate, beaches with many cultural, sporting and leisure amenities. The beautiful countryside of the New Forest, South Downs and Isle of Wight are within easy reach. The city is well connected by road and rail to London and southern England as well as wider connections via the cross-channel ferry port and nearby international airport.
