Clinical Psychologist - Autism Assessor (ADOS trained)

We are recruiting ADOS assessors from the following professional backgrounds:

• Occupational Therapists (OT)
• Speech and Language Therapists (SALT)
• Psychologists (Clinical, Counselling or Forensic)
• Registered Nurses (Mental Health or Learning Disability)

You must be HCPC or NMC registered and formally trained and experienced in ADOS or ADI-R.

Main duties of the job

Role Overview

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Paediatricians, Psychiatrists and Psychologists, you will:

• Conduct face-to-face ADOS-2 assessments using the appropriate module for the childs age and ability
• Record detailed behavioural observations
• Contribute findings to the MDT diagnostic discussion
• Support the consultant clinician in providing same-day feedback to families
• Add a concise written summary of your ADOS findings to contribute to the diagnostic report (issued within six weeks)
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and uphold safeguarding standards throughout

Each assessment is fully inclusive of observation, scoring, MDT discussion, reporting and feedback. Clinics are typically scheduled for four assessments per day.

Job responsibilities

Undertake detailed psychological assessments as part of autism diagnostic pathways (e.g. ADOS-2, ADI-R, cognitive and emotional functioning tools, structured interviews).

Analyse and interpret assessment findings, considering co-occurring conditions (ADHD, learning disability, mental health difficulties).

Work collaboratively with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, and other MDT members in diagnostic formulation and feedback.

Write clear, evidence-based diagnostic reports to inform clinical decision-making and provide recommendations.

Deliver feedback sessions to individuals and families, ensuring sensitive and supportive communication.

Contribute to post-diagnostic care, including psychoeducation, signposting, and therapeutic interventions where appropriate.

Ensure safeguarding responsibilities and duty of candour obligations are fulfilled.

Person Specification

Experience

• Experience of working with autistic individuals across the lifespan.
• Experience in administering and interpreting psychological assessments.
• Multidisciplinary team working experience.
• Experience in report writing for clinical or statutory purposes.

Knowledge and skills

• In-depth knowledge of autism spectrum conditions, differential diagnosis, and co-occurring conditions.
• Skills in psychological formulation, assessment, and intervention.
• Ability to synthesise complex information and present findings clearly.
• Excellent communication skills with individuals, families, and professionals.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload.
• IT literacy for electronic records and reporting.

Qualifications

• Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or Counselling Psychology (or equivalent recognised by HCPC).
• Current HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist.
• Additional post-qualification training in autism assessment tools (e.g. ADOS-2, ADI-R) desirable.
