Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pain Management, Band 7
Full time position (37.5h/week)
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic Pain Management Service, working across Chelsea & Westminster and West Middlesex University Hospitals. The service provides highly specialised care to adult and paediatric patients with acute and chronic pain, within a multidisciplinary setting. The Clinical Nurse Specialist works alongside the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist to support and develop staff and the service as a whole.
The outpatient role supports the pain clinic, neuromodulation and capsaicin service, including TENS, post‑procedure follow‑up and medication review clinics.
The role requires excellent communication, motivation, and leadership to sustain ongoing development of the service. It also involves education, audit and research strategy development.

Clinical Responsibilities
Work as an autonomous practitioner, delivering expert nursing service for inpatients and outpatients, including nurse‑led follow‑up clinics after pain‑related procedures, telephone clinics and medication review clinics.
Provide advice and support to patients and relatives during treatments such as spinal cord stimulators (SCS), percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (PENS) and capsaicin treatment.
Manage and discharge patients within agreed department protocols and guidelines; arrange appropriate follow‑up and discuss with consultant as necessary.
Provide specialist advice and education to patients to enable informed choice about therapies and medicines.
Guide neuromodulation services, maintain accurate databases for SCS, capsaicin and inpatient pain patients, and coordinate theatre lists for patients requiring neuromodulation.
Maintain good working relationships with supporting clinical services, participate in pain service multidisciplinary meetings, and engage in reprogramming of SCS patients.
Liaise with patients about their pain journey, maintain communication, and respond to queries.
Monitor side effects and efficacy of drugs and treatments, ensuring results are checked and abnormalities reported.
Coordinate theatre attendance for SCS trial and implant procedures.
Provide a high standard of nursing care while cooperating with the multidisciplinary team.
Education
Recognise areas for clinical development and respond appropriately, utilising available resources.
Assist in the ongoing development and structuring of the department as a learning environment.
Promote change and collaborate in the development of innovative practice.
Support induction and orientation of new staff and evaluate staff performance.
Contribute to patient educational tools, such as written information.
Keep up to date with current and potential research, and relevant information for patient care.
Attend relevant courses, meetings and conferences as appropriate.
Maintain own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness.
Management Responsibilities
Report potential complaints or untoward incidents to the Lead Nurse and participate in the Trust’s risk‑management process.
Provide clinical leadership to junior nurses.
Order specialist equipment such as TENS machines and neuromodulation kit.
Develop initiatives to run cost‑effective services within budgetary and resource constraints.
Professional and Personal Development
Ensure professional learning needs are identified and met through the Knowledge & Skills Framework (KSF).
Promote an open and friendly working environment; participate actively in departmental educational meetings.
Keep abreast of current research and information relevant to patient care.
Meet regularly with team members and ensure effective communication across teams.
Maintain links with other clinical nurse specialists within and outside the organisation to share knowledge and provide support.
Attend relevant education and training courses, including nurse network meetings and conferences.
Be involved in setting standards, clinical audit and uphold high nursing care standards.
Act as a member of the research team, disseminating research and audit findings through presentations and publications.
Ensure appropriate cover during absences or leave.
Act in accordance with the Nursing & Midwifery Council Code of Professional Practice and guide others to do the same.
Maintain local Trust policies such as fire, manual handling, sick policy.
Ensure all activities comply with Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare policy guidelines and promote the Trust’s Nursing Strategy and Philosophy for Nursing.
All duties must be carried out under supervision or within Trust policy and procedure, and the post holder must never undertake duties outside their skill level; seek clarification from a more senior member of staff if required.
