Job description

The role has an allocation 5 PAs and is an excellent opportunity for an established Developmental Paediatric Consultant or an Associate Specialist working in the Developmental Paediatric service to step into a leadership role and develop their management skills. The post holder will provide clinical leadership and be responsible for implementing and monitoring quality assurance programs to maintain and improve clinical standards, have a quality oversight of the service including identify and manage clinical risk. The postholder will be integral member of the senior leadership team and encourage and lead a culture of innovation and continuous improvement alongside supporting clinical team with their professional development. The post holder will have a key role working with partners across the local system including commissioners and other providers.

Main Responsibilities Clinical Lead - Developmental Paediatrics

• Provide strategic leadership for the Developmental Paediatrics service, including service planning, improvement, and goal setting.
• Lead and support the multidisciplinary team through effective job planning, appraisals, supervision, and professional development.
• Oversee clinical governance, quality assurance, risk management, incident review, and CQC compliance.
• Manage day-to-day operational delivery, including complaints, budgets, and contribution to senior leadership forums.
• Work in close partnership with HCRG, the Business Unit Head, and senior leaders to assure safe, effective, and sustainable services.
• Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and high clinical standards across the service.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with local authorities, external providers, and key stakeholders.

Consultant / Associate Specialist in Community & Developmental Paediatrics

• Deliver specialist assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing care for children and young people with developmental and neurodevelopmental needs, including SEND and safeguarding work.
• Lead developmental paediatric clinics in line with referral criteria and service pathways.
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement, audit, and research activities.
• Support training, supervision, and CPD within a collaborative and supportive team environment.
• Develop subspecialty interests and help shape innovative, outcome-focused community paediatric services in Surrey.

Job Plan Summary (7.5 PAs)

• Clinical Lead (Management): 5.0 PAs (20 hours/week)
• Supporting Professional Activities (SPA): 1.5 PAs (6 hours/week)
• Direct Clinical Care (DCC) - Clinic: 1.0 PA (4 hours/week)

Qualifications

• UK-recognised medical degree (MBChB/MBBS) with full GMC registration and work permit if required
• MRCPCH or equivalent; on the Specialist Register for Paediatrics or within 6 months of CCT
• Minimum 2 years' experience in Community Paediatrics
• Level 3 safeguarding children training and experience
• Excellent clinical, leadership, team-working, organisational, and interpersonal skills
• Experience working within a multidisciplinary team and proficient IT skills

Desirable qualifications

• CCT in Community Child Health
• Training and experience in standardised autism (e.g., ADOS, ADI-R, 3di) and developmental assessments
• Experience in ADHD assessment and management
• Experience in child protection assessments, looked-after children assessments, and SEND advice
• Track record in service improvement, audit, quality improvement, teaching/training, and published research

Other requirements

You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of how working in community settings differs from hospital and have the ability to diagnose and appropriately manage developmental abnormalities within children. You will additionally be involved in clinics focusing on neurodevelopment, special needs and autism.
