Job description
Overview

The Hewitt Fertility Centre, Liverpool is seeking an embryologist to join our highly skilled and dedicated team of 35 scientists on a permanent basis. We provide a full range of laboratory therapeutic and diagnostic treatments (including IMSI, PGT, cryopreservation and donation programmes) and offer the latest time-lapse technologies in our state-of-the-art laboratories. Successful applicants should be personable with excellent communication skills, experienced in all routine embryological procedures and willing to take part in a weekend and on-call rota. Applicants must have experience of performing clinical workload within an Embryology laboratory setting and be familiar with the HFEA Code of Practice. HCPC registration is essential and we encourage applications from those who are HCPC registered. Part-time employment will be considered; please note this on your application. Successful applicants may be required to provide cover at both Liverpool and Knutsford sites on occasion.

Main duties
  • To perform all laboratory procedures associated with the diagnostic and therapeutic treatment services provided by the Hewitt Fertility Centres including semen analysis, sperm preparation (including donor and surgically retrieved sperm from testicular and epididymal sources), oocyte and embryo handling, gamete and embryo cryopreservation, clinical intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), time-lapse technologies and other micromanipulation techniques.
  • To select embryos best suited for embryo transfer and cryopreservation.

Job responsibilities

  • To become fully proficient in, and to perform all clinical embryological procedures (including ICSI, vitrification and time-lapse technologies) as part of the diagnostic and therapeutic services provided by the Hewitt Fertility Centres.
  • To participate in patient treatment, including handling of high risk diseases (e.g., HIV, Hepatitis B & C) where relevant.
  • To communicate treatment details clearly to patients and to provide guidance on alternative treatments when necessary.
  • To counsel patients regarding treatment implications to help them make informed decisions and to break bad news when required.
  • To participate in embryo storage audits and to assist with contact for patients with embryos in storage.
  • To maintain liquid nitrogen storage vessels and handle materials safely in accordance with practice standards.
  • To perform duties in accordance with the HFEA Act and Code of Practice and other relevant regulations; to undertake formal witnessing as required by the HFEA.
  • To ensure informed consent is in place prior to treatments; to manage day-to-day workload and maintain high standards with meticulous attention to detail.
  • To work flexibly, including weekends and across all Hewitt Fertility Centre sites; to audit equipment daily and participate in maintenance and cleaning of laboratory areas.
  • To liaise with other centres regarding workload, treatments, outcomes, and transfer of gametes or embryos; to critically analyse and audit laboratory performance.
  • To collect data accurately and completely as required by the Hewitt Fertility Centre and the HFEA; to liaise with colleagues and healthcare professionals to ensure timely and accurate information exchange.
  • To participate in research development and dissemination of findings at local, national and international levels; to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and assist in training and supervising trainees and less experienced staff.
  • To provide Andrology cover when short-staffed by performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the Andrology laboratory; to participate in external QC (UKNEQAS) to maintain UKAS accreditation; to be proficient with laboratory information systems and carry out related administrative duties; to follow procedures to achieve the best clinical outcomes with attention to detail.
  • To be involved in identification procedures and consent processes in line with HFEA requirements.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in life sciences (or an equivalent qualification) from an EU University; alternative degrees or other qualifications may be acceptable
  • Certificate in Clinical Embryology awarded by the Association of Clinical Embryologists (ACE) and the Institute of Biology or graduate of the Modernising Scientific Careers STP training programme

  • Relevant higher degree

  • Professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. Ability to work without direct supervision and to organise the laboratory on a day-to-day basis.
