Role and Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist support to clinical staff in the assessment and management of children/young people aged 0–19 years with complex continence needs.
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge from theoretical and practical experience and apply specialist clinical skills to assess continence needs; use clinical pathways and guidelines to guide treatment.
  • Be competent in diagnosing continence symptoms and treating appropriately; communicate sensitive information with empathy and reassurance to patients and families, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.
  • Refer children and young people to other specialists and agencies as appropriate.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate continence management care plans in partnership with the child/young person and their family, working closely with other clinical staff and disciplines.
  • Support the education and training of registered staff, healthcare assistants and student nurses, ensuring compliance with relevant standards to support practice learning.
  • Support and train parents/carers in the correct use of identified medical equipment and management programmes to foster confidence and independence at home.
  • Administer medications, treatments and interventions as prescribed and monitor their effects.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., school nurses, health visitors, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, community children’s nurses, learning disability nurses, psychologists).
  • Provide initial triage and assessment for new referrals to the paediatric continence service.

  • Strong communication skills with patients and carers; ability to support families in understanding and managing continence needs.
  • Ability to work autonomously within a friendly team of continence nurses and support staff.
  • Ability to work across Norfolk and Waveney locality delivering clinics as required.
Additional Information

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Norfolk Children’s continence service as a Band 6 continence nurse. The successful candidate will assess and treat children with constipation, nocturnal enuresis, daytime wetting and delayed toilet training. Up to 30 hours per week are available.
