We are currently seeking an outstanding payments leader to join our team in the role of Chief Payments Officer.

The UK Payments market is a vital component of the economy. It is central to our customers, making up the majority of interactions a customer has with their bank. As well as this, the National Payments Vision also sets out an ambitious roadmap to put the UK back a global leader within the payments market via new infrastructure and the growth of digital assets and currencies. Within this context, the Chief Payments Officer RBW role will lead a team of c60 people to deliver UK RBW’s ambitions to truly ‘excel in payments’. There are three core pillars to this enterprise leadership role:

  1. Ensuring RBW’s customer journeys and outcomes are truly world class, propelling UK RBW to a top 5 ranking in payments NPS
  2. Taking an industry leadership position within the National Payments Vision and Open Banking, ensuring we create a viable alternative to card payments for our customers
  3. Leading UK RBW’s payment innovation, including ensuring customers and our organisation is ready for Digital Assets and Currencies

In this role you will
  • Provide Exceptional Leadership and Drive Engagement: Embed the UK RBW strategic ambitions while fostering team engagement to achieve collective goals.
  • Role Model Leadership Principles: Act as a senior leader, exemplifying leadership principles and ensuring alignment with HSBC's culture and values.
  • Build a High-Performing Team: Develop and maintain a team capable of articulating and executing a clear strategic vision, translating it into tangible actions and outcomes.
  • Ensure Talent and Succession Planning: Implement robust talent and succession plans to secure future leadership and continuity within the team.
  • Champion Inclusivity: Cultivate an inclusive environment that reflects HSBC's brand and supports diverse perspectives and collaboration.
  • Manage Industry Relationships: Engage with key industry bodies (e.g., BOE, UK Finance, FCA, HMT) to strengthen relationships and leverage market insights for strategic advantage.
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements
  • Significant expertise in Cards/Payments product management. Must have proven leadership in delivering across customer, commercial, and conduct scorecards with large teams.
  • Strategic Direction and Stakeholder Engagement. Must have experience in setting strategic direction, galvanizing stakeholders beyond direct management, and delivering across the matrix.
  • Industry Engagement and Regulatory Expertise. Expertise in managing industry engagements and understanding current and future regulatory environments in payments.
  • Leadership and Initiative Delivery. Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver multiple initiatives in parallel effectively.
  • Network Building and Relationship Management. Skilled in building effective networks across business areas and developing trust‑based relationships.
  • Communication and Adaptability. Ability to present complex issues clearly to diverse stakeholders and adapt to rapidly changing priorities under pressure.

This is a hybrid working role with the base location as London, Birmingham, Leeds or Chester.
