About the Role

Join our rollingstock maintenance team and develop hands-on skills in one of Australia’s most iconic rail environments (The Ghan, Indian Pacific, Great Southern and Overland). As a Carriage Builder/Shopfitting Apprentice (Certificate III in Shopfitting), you will be trained across a wide range of carriage maintenance tasks, focusing on both interior and exterior components. This role offers a unique opportunity to learn from experienced tradespeople while contributing to the safety, reliability, and presentation of our premium train fleet.

Key Responsibilities

Under supervision and guided training of experienced carriage builders, you will learn to:

  • Inspect, repair, and install carriage interior components such as furniture, wall coverings, flooring, windows, interior & exterior doors, cabinets, bunk beds, and upholstery
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance activities through routine inspections, support fault reporting processes, and carry out troubleshooting and repair tasks
  • Service hinges, locks, and other internal fittings to maintain carriage serviceability standards
  • Maintenance of carriage bodies, including, side service flaps, and access hatches
  • Assist in sealing and weatherproofing carriage exterior
  • Support continuous improvement and refurbishment projects to enhance guest comfort and operational efficiency
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery safely and effectively
  • Maintain tools and equipment in line with 5S and Lean Manufacturing principles
  • Ensure adequate stock for all car builder-related spares is available for quick replacement during breakdowns
  • Follow safety, environmental, and rail compliance protocols at all times
