Job description
Overview

A Vacancy at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced pharmacist to lead the pharmacy service for the Trauma and Orthopaedics Care Group. UHS is a designated trauma centre for the South of England, so you will see a mixture of acute trauma patients and elective orthopaedic patients.

Role and Responsibilities

The lead pharmacist will work closely as part of the multidisciplinary team, linking in with ward teams, consultant surgeons, ortho-geriatricians and specialist nurses to ensure safe and effective provision of pharmaceutical care to this patient group. There is a significant amount of microbiology input required for these patients, so you will be a key player working closely with the consultant microbiologist for T&O and attending ward rounds to ensure appropriate use of antibiotics.

As the lead for the care group, you will:

  • Manage the service provided by the junior pharmacists and technicians on rotation.
  • Represent pharmacy at monthly meetings including the care group governance meeting.
  • Line manage one of the rotational Band 7 pharmacists, gaining management experience.
  • Work closely with the large team of pharmacists and technicians on a day-to-day basis.
  • Be supported by an experienced Band 8b lead pharmacist for the Division that T&O is part of.

You will be supported to undertake further study in a clinical or managerial area and to gain an independent prescriber qualification. This role could suit an experienced orthopaedic or surgical pharmacist, or someone with a solid grounding in surgical or medical specialities seeking a more senior management role while maintaining a clinical focus.

Team and Development

UHS has one of the largest pharmacy departments in the country, with over 400 staff. The team comprises over 100 pharmacists, including over 50 qualified independent pharmacist prescribers and consultant pharmacists in several specialties. The Trust supports pharmacists in their development and credentialing at Advanced Practice and Consultant level.

UHS is committed to a flexible working environment where possible and to providing learning and development opportunities, including support for further study and an independent prescriber qualification. The Trust champions individuality and an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone can belong and contribute.

Additional Information

All pharmacists are expected to participate in extended hours including late nights and weekend dispensary support on a rotational basis.
