Main duties of the job

As a CAMHS Urgent Care and Outreach Practitioner, you\'ll be at the heart of our service, working with young people experiencing acute mental health crises. You\'ll provide rapid assessments, short-term interventions, and support families and carers to manage risk safely. No two shifts are the same - from emergency assessments in A&E, to community-clinic offering 7 days follow up response, working in collaboration with the community CAMHS clinic, supporting the child and young person in their family homes and schools.

Job responsibilities

Children/Young people may present with emotional distress, self-harm, mental health crisis, or the psychological consequences of acute or chronic physical health problems. You will be expected to have the skills to deal with a very broad range of mental health needs as well as undertaking initial psychiatric assessments and reviews and also liaise with other professionals as deemed appropriate.

You will be required to make clear autonomous decisions based on an analysis of the complex presenting problems and judgements based on available treatment options. This will include those related to the admission and discharge of children/young people. You will also work closely with both internal and external stakeholders.

Your interpersonal skills will be expected to be excellent and you must be able to confidently communicate at a high level both verbally and in writing. You must be able to demonstrate deescalation skills with challenging and/or acutely distressed young people.

The CAMHS Crisis Mental health specialist practitioner will promote excellence in mental health nursing practice through the integration of expert clinical practice, education and consultancy, acting as an important resource and being committed to nursing research.

Good Leadership skills are expected as part of the post holders duties which include case load management, offer training to other colleagues, clinical supervision to junior staff and working together with other teams and partner agencies in the community.

Person Specification

Training and Qualification

• Relevant Professional Qualification i.e. RMN [NMC], SW with current registration.
• Post registration training in therapeutic skills/CAMHS work.
• Evidence of continuing professional and personal development.
• Formal qualification in an appropriate therapeutic field.
• Qualified AMP/ Approved SW

Experience

• CAMHS experience as a registered mental health practitioner.
• Psychiatric liaison/crisis intervention experience.
• Experience of implementing and monitoring standards of care.
• Experience of participation in case conferences and reviews.
• Experience of supervising junior staff within own and/or other disciplines.
• Experience in managing and leading multi-professional meeting.
• Demonstrable post qualification experience of working in a CAMHS setting on either inpatient or outpatient basis.
• Experience of using a range of therapeutic approaches.
• Experience of delivering Training.
• Experience of deputising as a Team Lead

Knowledge & Skills

• Specialist knowledge of mental health disorders as well as their relationship to physical disorders.
• Global clinical Mental Health assessment experience.
• Clinical Risk Assessment and Management/Safety Plan.
• Knowledge of counselling skills and psychosocial interventions.
• High level skills in risk assessment and management.
• Proven ability to engage children, young people and their families in therapeutic work.
• Sound understanding of child, adolescent and family dynamics and development.
• Knowledge of Mental Capacity Act (1983 & 2005).
• Ability to interpret research and apply to practice.
• Clear understanding of the Mental Health Act, and National Policy.
• Skills in CBT or family work.
• Research and audit skills.
