Job description

Looking for a role that will have a meaningful impact in IT

We are looking for an individual to ensure that our suite of internally developed applications and selected commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software remain reliable, well‑documented, and continuously improved.

What part will you play? If you’re looking for a place where you can make a meaningful difference, you’ve found it. The work we do at Markel gives people the confidence to move forward and seize opportunities, and you’ll find your fit amongst our global community of optimists and problem‑solvers. We’re always pushing each other to go further because we believe that when we realize our potential we can help others reach theirs.

Join us and play your part in something special!

The opportunity

We are looking for a proactive and diligent Business Systems Analyst (BSA) to join our Application Support and Enhancements team.

As a BSA you will play a dual role: supporting the stability of existing systems through Incident and Problem analysis while also enabling the delivery of small enhancements by working closely with small‑enhancement engineers, Product and Service Owners, and business stakeholders. You will be responsible for requirements gathering, process documentation, and knowledge management, helping to bridge the gap between business needs and technical solutions.

This is a hands‑on role where you will collaborate with end users, technical teams, and vendors to ensure services are efficient, resilient, and meet business expectations.

What you’ll be doing
  • Incident and Problem Analysis – Assist in the investigation of recurring issues, conduct root‑cause analysis, and document findings to support sustainable resolution.
  • Enhancement Support – Work alongside developers on small enhancements, helping to capture, refine, and prioritise requirements.
  • Requirements Gathering – Facilitate workshops, interviews and user story creation to translate business needs into clear, actionable specifications.
  • Process and Documentation Management – Maintain up‑to‑date system documentation, support knowledge articles, process maps and procedures.
  • Stakeholder Engagement – Act as a point of contact for business users, ensuring requirements are clearly understood and communicated.
  • Change and Release Support – Assist in testing, validation and documentation of application changes and releases.
  • Collaboration with Service Owner – Support service performance monitoring, service reviews and improvements.
  • Continuous Improvement – Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce manual effort and improve system usability.
The successful candidate
  • Is an experienced Business Systems Analyst, Application Analyst or similar role within application support and/or enhancement teams.
  • Has strong analytical skills with the ability to perform Incident analysis, root‑cause investigation and Problem management.
  • Has practical experience in requirements gathering and documentation (user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows).
  • Is familiar with internally developed applications and COTS systems, ideally in a multi‑application environment.
  • Has an understanding of ITIL service management processes (Incident, Problem, Release, Change management).
  • Has good communication and facilitation skills to work effectively with both technical teams (onshore and offshore) and business stakeholders.
  • Has a structured and methodical approach to documentation, process management and knowledge sharing.
  • Can work collaboratively in agile and iterative delivery environments.
  • Has a proactive problem‑solving attitude with a focus on stability, usability and business value delivery.
