The North Lancashire and South Cumbria Breast Screening Service, as part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, operates Breast Screening and Symptomatic services from dedicated imaging units at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital and Westmorland General Hospital.

In addition, we operate two mobile units in the community.

The North Lancashire and South Cumbria Breast Screening Service is a highly performing service for Breast Screening with a dedicated, caring and professional team of Consultant Radiologists, Consultant Radiographers, Advanced Practitioners, Mammographers, Assistant Practitioners, Clinical Support Workers, Programme Management and Administrators.

The unit is fully digital with a robust PACS system. Our Radiology team is also part of the strong and effective UHMB Breast Multidisciplinary Team alongside members of the Surgical, Histopathology, Breast Care Nurses and Oncology services.

Main duties of the job

This is a senior leadership post, combining advanced clinical practice with strategic oversight of a high-performing screening service. The Consultant Radiographer role offers the opportunity to shape and deliver expert clinical care across breast screening and symptomatic services, working closely with a multidisciplinary team to drive innovation, quality, and patient-centred care.

In addition to the core clinical post, the successful candidate will take on the responsibilities of Director of Breast Screening (DoBS), which attracts an additional responsibility allowance for leading and managing the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) across the region. These additional responsibilities are non-contractual and can be removed with three months' notice. The DoBS role includes liaison with NHS England and the regional Quality Assurance teams, service development, and performance oversight.

We are seeking an experienced, highly motivated individual with:

  • Demonstrable leadership skills and strategic vision
  • A passion for service quality and continuous improvement

This is a unique opportunity to influence population health outcomes, contribute to national priorities in early cancer detection, and lead an experienced and supportive team at a regional level.

Informal enquiries are encouraged. To arrange a visit, please contact Emily Brooks, Head of Breast Screening.
