Main Duties

We are delighted to advertise this exciting opportunity for a dynamic and experienced Pain Management Advanced Practice Physiotherapist to work within our multi‑disciplinary Pain management service. Our service is made up of specialists within the fields of medicine, physiotherapy, psychology, nursing, and exercise therapy. You will work closely with the Medical and Psychology clinical leads to innovate, progress the direction of the service, ensuring efficiency and embedding new ways of working.

For this joint clinical leadership and operational role we are looking for someone with well‑developed experience of operational service delivery and of leading teams. You will also provide clinical leadership and line management to the team of specialist pain management physiotherapists.

The successful candidate should be an experienced expert clinician and will also carry a clinical caseload. The successful candidate is required to be able demonstrate the Trust values, and the responsibilities of the job description and person specification. You will be supported in this role by the Outpatient Therapy Lead for Therapy services and wider Pain management leadership.

Person Specification
Education & Professional Qualifications (Essential)
  • BSc Degree in Physiotherapy or Diploma or equivalent
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration
  • Postgraduate training or development in clinical skills up to MSc level with a focus in pain or musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  • Evidence or portfolio of postgraduate continued development
  • Postgraduate training or development in management and leadership skills
Education & Professional Qualifications (Desirable)
  • Membership of specialist interest group
  • Independent prescriber qualification
  • Musculoskeletal injection therapy qualification
Experience (Essential)
  • Substantial postgraduate experience in Pain management.
  • Substantial experience of Operational leadership within a service.
  • Experience of managing service demand, capacity and utilisation.
  • Experience of leading change.
  • Experience of service review and improvement.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches to the management of patients with a wide variety of complex chronic pain conditions.
  • Experience of Acceptance and Commitment and Cognitive behavioural approaches to pain.
  • Experience of delivering Pain Management Programmes or equivalent group work.
  • Experience in managing highly distressed patients in group and individual settings.
  • Experience of supervising senior qualified staff.
  • Experience of leading a service and team.
  • Active involvement in clinical audit, research and policy/guideline implementation.
  • Experience of teaching to uni and multidisciplinary groups.
  • Evidence of service development, quality improvement & managing change within the workplace.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of NHS reforms and policies and their impact on service.
Skills (Essential)
  • Highly specialist knowledge within the pain field and ability to apply this in a clinical setting.
  • To be competent in the decision making process and ordering of any investigations necessary in order to reach a diagnosis or decide on the appropriate management of the patient’s condition e.g. x‑rays, MRI, blood tests, EMGs, ultrasound, listing for surgery in line with protocols and guidelines. This will require highly advanced clinical reasoning and highly developed problem solving and analytical skills and is beyond the normal scope of physiotherapy practice.
  • Excellent communication / interpersonal skills both written and verbal.
  • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
  • Able to carry out concurrent activities and work in an unpredictable working pattern.
  • Ability to lead in service development, liaising closely with the MDT in order to promote clinical excellence.
