North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust are recruiting for an experienced and passionate Senior Staff Nurse to join their Chemotherapy Treatment unit.

The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is a medium-sized acute and community trust with over 525 beds and over 600 community staff, serving more than 600,000 people living across Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest.

Please note that this role is full time 37.5 hours per week.

Job Summary:

The post holder with the unit manager will be responsible for the effective and efficient operational management of the chemotherapy department and support with the following remit: budget control, clinical governance, staff development and training, patient experience and research and audit.

Support the unit manager in providing professional leadership and direction within the team as well as being accountable for maintaining high standards within the unit which includes updating and the development of protocols / guidelines and patient/Carer’s information to ensure the management and administration of chemotherapy remains within national and local guidelines.

As one of Senior Nurse within the unit you will be expected to provide an environment in which the staff and patient are able to administer and receive safe administration of chemotherapy in keeping with local and national policy as well as always acting as a positive role model. You will participate in the assessment of patient across a complex and changing caseload of cancer patients to meet the individual’s health and wellbeing needs throughout the cancer pathway and confidently take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of or as delegated by the unit manager/nurse in Charge/Matron.

You will be expected to assist in maintaining and developing Cancer services and contribute to improvement within the service.

Act as a clinical resource within the unit.

Act as a positive role model to junior staff members, particular emphasis is put on the needs of staff to ensure that all staff recognizes their responsibility to deliver services in a high quality, courteous, patient focused manner and to always maintain patient confidentiality.

Provide expert holistic care of a high standard to both the patients and their relatives during SACT on the unit.

Introduction to the Department:

The Chemotherapy unit is a 20 chaired unit located on the 1st Floor Podium building. The unit is opened 5 days a week between 09:00 and 17:00 (subject to change as we are in the process of reevaluating our chemo scheduling processes) Patients attending the unit undergo a number of procedure including blood transfusions, PICC line placement, exchange transfusions and other non-chemotherapy infusions The unit is nurse led and supported medically by the oncology team who are located within the oncology unit adjacent to the chemotherapy unit.

Requirements:
  • 1st level Register General Nurse.
  • Mentorship qualification for willingness to work towards.
  • Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Current experience of working in an acute oncology setting Proven experience at Band 6 in oncology/haematology Management of central venous access devices.
  • Cannulation and Venepuncture.
  • Ability to manage and organise your day-to-day activities in a timely manner.
  • IV drug administration.
  • Can Adapt communication style as necessary and is able to work with and through others.
  • Ability to utilise research in clinical practice.
  • Good problem-solving skills, demonstrated by being able to provide first line response and to identify appropriate sources of secondary support following competencies.
  • Working within an Oncology setting.
  • An understanding of nursing issues in relation to nursing patient with cancer.
  • Supporting learner nurses and demonstrable teaching skills.
  • Computer literate able to use the various data bases within the trust.
  • Customer focussed[1]committed to ensuring a positive hospital experience for patient and their relatives/carers.
  • Strong motivation to work within a SACT setting.
  • Flexibility- able to adapt to ensure achievement of objectives within constantly changing situations and environment.
  • Ability to work with multi professionals/cultural organisations and in different health care settings.
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues across health and social setting.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situation.
  • Good presentation skills for conveying complex concepts. Influencing skills.
