Job description
Band 4 Registered Dental Nurse

We are looking for a Registered Dental Nurse to join our small but well established team in the Orthodontic and Maxillofacial Surgery department at Solihull Hospital.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Dental Nurse looking to broaden their experience and develop their clinical skills in a hospital environment. We're looking for someone who embodies our Trust values and is committed to delivering the high standards of care we strive for every day.

To be considered, candidates must hold a recognised Dental Nursing qualification and be registered with the General Dental Council. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with a warm, approachable manner and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. We value individuals who lead by example and support others in delivering excellent patient care.

While your primary base will be in the Orthodontic and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at Solihull Hospital, you will also be expected to support services at Good Hope Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth as needed.

We have two positions available - 1 full time and 1 part time (30 hours - 4 days)

Main duties of the job
  • Provide comprehensive chair side assistance to clinicians undertaking a range of routine & specialist dental, orthodontics & surgical interventions within the service.
  • Ensure the appropriate preparation of surgeries, ensuring the correct instruments, equipment and medicament's are available prior to the commencement of clinic.
  • Prepare and monitor patients before, during and after procedures, including:
    • Assurance & explanation of procedure
    • Appropriate care monitoring of the patient
    • Post procedural care, including oral health advice
  • Maintain patient records & transfer data to database, ensuring correct filing and storage.
  • Adhere to all Trust and departmental policies & procedures.
  • Prepare patients and set up for department x-ray & process images taken.
  • Be responsible for the safe disposal & tracking of instruments or equipment requiring decontamination following procedures.
  • Set up for dental or maxillofacial surgeries ensuring the correct equipment is available and anticipate required instruments.
  • Possess highly developed physical skills and accuracy, especially when assisting a clinician during surgical procedures.
  • Use initiative to prioritise and analyse patients' needs and individual circumstances to make the best use of time and resources or direct to the appropriate person.
  • Check essential equipment prior to use and highlight any concern to the medical devices team.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • National certificate in Dental Nursing or NVQ level 3 Dental nursing qualification.
  • Relevant experience to maintain registration with the General Dental Council.
  • Current GDC registration.
Experience
  • Experience of working with range of patients including children, the elderly or frail, those with a learning disability or cognitive impairment.
  • Understanding of a range of dental, orthodontic, maxillofacial procedures, plus knowledge of how to deal with a range of non‑routine activities.
  • Recent Orthodontic, Oral or Maxillofacial surgery experience.
  • Experience of a variety of work settings e.g. hospital, community clinics, NHS/Private Practice.
Additional Criteria
  • Proven ability to provide excellent chair side support to clinicians, managing a range of Dental, Orthodontic, Maxillofacial patients.
  • Excellent standards of written & verbal English.
  • Ability to communicate condition or treatment related information and advice to patients who may be nervous, have communication difficulties or learning disability.
  • To be able to prioritise own workload & to organise & manage clinics.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and as part of a team.
  • IT and keyboard skills.
  • Ability to handle/ manoeuvre equipment/Instruments.
  • Ability to work across all UHB sites as required by the role.
