Job description
Advanced Exercise and Rehabilitation Instructor

The closing date is 21 December 2025

The cancer physiotherapy team at Guy's and St Thomas' Trust is calling for a dynamic and motivated individual to join our Cancer Therapy Team working within the award‑winning Guy's Cancer Centre.

One opportunity exists for an experienced personal trainer or Band 3/4 rehabilitation instructor looking to develop their skills in cancer rehabilitation and work in an outpatient team.

Applicants would ideally have previous experience working with people with cancer or a strong desire to do so. Applicants will be providing person‑centred assessments and intervention to cancer patients throughout their treatment pathway from prehabilitation to rehabilitation. Successful applicants will lead one‑to‑one and group exercise sessions, delivering these either remotely or in‑person, and carry out administrative tasks to support the team.

Post holders will support service developments and show flexibility when adapting to and leading change. Excellent communication, organisational and information technology skills are essential for the role.

Main duties of the job
  • Lead and participate in physical activity and exercise interventions either face‑to‑face, by telephone or over virtual platforms, in 1:1 or group formats, for patients with a cancer diagnosis awaiting treatment (prehabilitation), currently receiving treatment or following treatment.
  • Provide individualised advice, information and support using motivational interviewing skills based on risk assessment and patient choice to encourage patients to become more physically active. This involves devising individual patient care plans including screening, onward referral, information delivery, goal setting, and identifying barriers, coping strategies and monitoring plans.
  • Carry your own caseload of patients and have access to a well‑equipped gym with a variety of machines, free weights and equipment to deliver tailored exercise interventions.
  • Promote the Guy's Cancer physical activity pathway, and be involved in health promotion during all stages of patient care.
  • Participate in team projects, service development and in‑house training.
