Job description

The Estates department at Furness General Hospital is a group of highly skilled electrical and mechanical engineers, creative building craftsperson, and dedicated support staff.

We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic person to join us.

You should be experienced, time served, and suitably qualified in a mechanical trade such as plumbing and heating, mechanical fitting, or associated plant maintenance and fault finding.

Main duties of the job

This is a highly rewarding role. Working under the Mechanical Estates Officer, the successful candidate will embark on a challenging adventure, safely, efficiently, and with patient and staff safety at the heart of their focus.

'Working as part of a team, and individually, you will be required to carry out mechanical maintenance and installation work within acute and community NHS properties. This will be on water systems, heating and pressure systems, and steam production. There may also be additional work on systems such as ventilation, air conditioning, medical gases, and other healthcare related mechanical services - with full training.

The successful candidate must be able to self-motivate, work relatively unsupervised, and be a good communicator on all levels. Flexible working will be required where you will assist other trades and undertake other tasks to maintain the building services.

A healthcare background would be advantageous but not essential - as specific training will be provided.

This post is based at Furness General Hospital.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital. (WGH) Also as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, and Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

RLI provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education & Qualifications
  • Full apprenticeship or equivalent approved training.
  • NVQ3, BTEC or Equivalent
  • AP/CP training in related subjects
  • City and Guild qualifications in relevant subjects.
  • Certificate in Hot & Cold Water Systems (BS2/H)
  • Certificate in Disinfection of Water Supplies (WN18)
Experience
  • Knowledge/experience of steam plant and other pressure systems
  • Experience of safe systems of work in a mechanical setting
  • Experience of hot and cold water systems including Legionella control and prevention
  • Experience of BMS systems
  • Experience of hospital systems and equipment, policies and procedures
  • Experience of commercial or industrial large scale mechanical plant
Skills, ability & knowledge
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with other members of the department, other (non technical) Trust staff, patients, visitors, public utilities and emergency services as required.
  • Ability to deal with information sensitively and confidentially.
