Job description

This is a fixed term/secondment opportunity for 12 months.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Speech and Language Therapist to join the acute team at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BHNFT). This post is an excellent position for a Newly Qualified Practitioner (NQP) or for someone wishing to further develop their skills across an acute inpatient setting.

The successful candidate will provide assessment, treatment, management and advice to patients with swallowing and/or communication difficulties. The position will cover the acute inpatient wards at Barnsley Hospital, including medical and surgical wards and the Acute Stroke Unit.

BHNFT offer robust clinical supervision and there are plenty of opportunities to complete internal and external training courses. This can include external training courses that comply with Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) policies and competencies in order to become a Dysphagia trained Practitioner. There is also opportunity to support completion of Newly Qualified Practitioner (NQP) competencies, if the successful candidate requires this.

Main duties of the job

To apply clinical knowledge to the assessment, diagnosis and management of individuals with swallowing and/or communication difficulties, providing care that is high quality, person-centred and in line with the up-to-date evidence base.

To demonstrate excellent communication & interpersonal skills when working with patients, families and within the wider multi-disciplinary team.

To show enthusiasm & proactive contribution to the Speech and Language Therapy Teams expansion across Barnsley Hospital. To follow departmental policies/guidelines and to support the development of innovations in service delivery, taking account of clinical governance.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Speech and Language Pathology or Therapy or equivalent
  • Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy (RCSLT) Certificate to Practice
  • Registration with the HCPC (Health Care Professions Council)
  • Member of RCSLT
Knowledge and Awareness
  • Knowledge of communication disorders in adults requiring Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) assessment and treatment.
  • Awareness of the requirement for excellence in clinical record keeping and confidentiality issues
  • Knowledge of health and safety
  • Knowledge of dysphagia assessment and treatment in adults
Skills and Abilities
