Duties, Responsibilities & Other

We are looking for a knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and client-focused Project Manager to lead the design and delivery of gas distribution system projects. This role is responsible for managing all phases of project execution—from concept through construction—while ensuring technical accuracy, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder coordination. It combines technical oversight, project management, and business development responsibilities. This position requires strong design experience, the ability to manage cross-functional teams, and a proven track record of developing and maintaining strong client relationships. The ideal candidate is adaptable, collaborative, and motivated to support strategic growth in the utility sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage gas distribution system projects, including new mains, services, and system upgrades.
  • Oversee the design process, ensuring compliance with CFR 192, ASME B31.8, DOT/PHMSA regulations, and local/state codes.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings, calculations, and technical submittals.
  • Collaborate with internal design teams, CAD technicians, and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate permitting, utility relocations, and public agency reviews.
  • Manage project budgets, scopes, schedules, and risk assessments.
  • Serve as the primary client contact—developing trusted relationships and providing regular updates.
  • Support proposal development, cost estimating, and business development efforts.
  • Represent the company at industry events, client meetings, and presentations.
  • Ensure quality assurance, safety standards, and project documentation are maintained.
Key Technical Skills – Required
  • Knowledge of CFR 192, ASME B31.8, and gas utility regulatory standards.
  • Understanding of local and state code requirements.
  • Experience working in the energy/utilities industry.
  • Ability to work within or adapt to client systems such as AS8, GIS, and Maximo.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and client management skills.
Key Technical Skills
  • Direct experience with Natural Gas Distribution System design and delivery.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
  • Experience with hydraulic modeling tools (e.g., Synergi Gas) a plus.
  • Working knowledge of business development practices and client capture strategies.
Project Management and Leadership
  • Manage all aspects of the project(s), including technical staff, subcontractors, and suppliers, to ensure timely and successful project completion.
  • Develop and communicate the Project Management Plan, outlining objectives, scope, schedule, budget, quality standards, and safety protocols.
  • Develop project-specific scope of work and contract documents in compliance with client requirements and industry standard of care.
  • Effectively manage project scope, ensuring alignment with client expectations and requirements.
  • Maintain project schedules, proactively identifying delays or conflicts to minimize impact.
  • Monitor project budgets and expenditures, implementing cost-control measures as needed.
  • Uphold high-quality standards, overseeing QA processes and adherence to standards and specifications.
  • Serve as the primary client contact, maintaining open communication and addressing inquiries promptly.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and project team members to drive project success.
  • Actively manage the project for compliance with contract scope, schedule, including change orders.
  • Allocate resources efficiently and ensure the team is adequately staffed and equipped.
  • Identify and manage project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and prepare contingency plans.
Training, Development, and Compliance
  • Mentor staff to assist in their training and development.
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures.
  • Provide input to develop project-specific safety plans and implement plans to ensure compliance with all safety rules and regulations.
Financial Management and Reporting
  • Experienced at negotiating contract terms, scope and fees with clients/subconsultants.
  • Experienced at developing project schedules from inception to completion and identifying concurrent task opportunities to optimize schedule.
  • Report monthly on proposals/business development, project reporting, and project completion to Sr. PM or Practice Leader.
  • Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization targets (70-80% typical).
  • Chart and provide project performance results, report progress, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Prepare inter-practice agreements and/or outside subcontracts as required.
  • Responsible for project cash management (WIP/AR) and providing comments to Finance and Operations monthly.
  • Set up new projects and provide weekly new project data to the Sr. PM or Practice Leader.
Business Development and Marketing
  • Identify and evaluate project opportunities, participate in consultant selection, and prepare qualification/experience statements.
  • Identify new business opportunities, coordinate and participate in client presentations, develop proposal teams, and promote KCI capabilities.
  • Assist project closeout with overall project write-up and marketing-ready photos.
Project Execution and Technical Oversight
  • Fully manage all required project management and technical deliverables in the contract scope.
  • Compare field data to design plans and conduct site visits to gather data.
  • Prepare all phases of designs and deliverables for approval.
  • Read and interpret technical documents required for project execution.
Qualifications

Education and/or Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (AEC Industry) with a minimum of 3 years of related professional experience, or 7 years of equivalent experience.
  • Master's Degree in a related field (AEC Industry).
  • Participation in continuing education and professional development programs.
  • Experience in project management roles with a track record of successful project delivery.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, strong organizational and time-management skills, and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Technical knowledge in the specific field of the project.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to project management, QA, and safety.
  • Strong problem-solving and negotiation skills; understanding of accounting principles for budgets and reporting.

Certificates, licenses, and/or Registrations Required:

  • Successful completion of the KCI PM Training and Contract Training for current employees or ability to complete within six months for new hires.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment.
  • Motor vehicle check
